Faithful, Loyal Love

Reading: Psalm 36:5-11

Psalm 36:6 – “Your righteousness is like the strongest mountains; your justice is like the deepest sea.”

As I read the first few verses of today’s passage, I could hear the words of Third Day’s “Your Love Oh Lord” in my mind. Hearing these words reminds me that the Psalms are really songs. They are expressions of an array of emotions: joy and defeat, praise and lament. Expressing one’s emotions opens the doors of communication with God. Today’s reading is an expression of praise for God’s faithful and loyal love.

The psalmist rejoices that God’s faithful love is everywhere. David then celebrates the character of God’s righteousness and justice. They are “like the strongest mountain… like the deepest sea.” There is an unshakable and unending quality to God’s love, justice, and righteousness. This is why they flow like a river into our lives and world. David then proclaims that God’s love is “priceless.” Humankind finds “refuge” in God, and in God we find “the spring of life.” Walking in God’s light and love, we know the way to abundant life here and now. Oh how great is the Father’s love for you and for me!

In verse 11 David asks God to “extend your righteousness” to those whose heart is right with God. When we know God’s faithful love in our hearts, we experience it in our lives. This love dwells in us and flows out of us, into the world. In this way, we are living extensions of God’s loyal love. As we live each day, may we bear God’s faithful and loyal love into the world around us, bringing light and joy, justice and refuge, life and hope. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, may our love be like your love, reaching to the furthest corners of our lives, working down into the deepest darkness of this world. May your justice break forth, being poured out for all people everywhere. In and through your love, may all come to experience the joy of your salvation. Amen.

An Unshakable Kingdom

Reading: Hebrews 12:25-28

Hebrews 12:28 – “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s continue to express our gratitude.”

The writer of Hebrews begins our passage for today with “See to it that you don’t resist the one who is speaking.” These words are in reference to what was previously written in this chapter. The “one” is the risen one, Jesus, “the mediator of the new covenant.” Jesus “speaks” to all believers, to us, his followers, then and now, through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

During Jesus’ time on earth many “refused to listen.” They will not escape the judgment to come. The author ponders how believers will escape if they too reject the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are reminded that just as God’s voice has “shaken the earth” before, the power of the divine voice will shake the earth once more. All that is of this world will be “shaken” and will be removed. What can’t be shaken is what will remain.

The writer of Hebrews speaks of this in verse 28, writing, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s continue to express our gratitude.” The eternal kingdom promised to the faithful will be realized with the return of Jesus. This promise and the new heaven and earth are what cannot be shaken. The promise is solid and true. The promise is ours. So, yes, let us express our gratitude to the Lord our God. Hallelujah! Thank you, Jesus!

Prayer: Lord God, as we live day by day, life often feels “shaky.” There is so much division and unrest, so much poverty and suffering. In this world it can be hard to hold fast to this vision of a coming, unshakable kingdom. And yet you are present to us, available whenever and wherever we are willing to have ears to listen and eyes to see. Open our spirits to your Spirit. Empower and equip us to be people who build up and live out your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
