Spirit Guidance

Reading: Galatians 5:16-21

Galatians 5:16 – “I say be guided by the Spirit and you won’t carry out your selfish desires.”

At the end of chapter 5 Paul contrasts two ways of living. On one end of the spectrum Paul offers what it looks like to live for self. In the other end he offers what it looks like to live for God. The reality is that our life is seldom one or the other – we almost always live somewhere in between focusing on self and focusing on God. Paul begins the passage for today with these words of wisdom: “I say be guided by the Spirit and you won’t carry out your selfish desires.” This is so because our selfish desires are, in fact, “set against the Spirit,” and vice versa. The selfish and Spirit are “opposed” to each other.

In those times when we allow ourselves to be guided by the Spirit, we do not do whatever we want. Although not under the Law, the Spirit does guide and lead us. (And it convicts and redirects at times.) The Spirit provides what I once heard described as “guardrails.” We bump up against the Spirit once in a while, but it can generally keep us in our journey of faith. Yes, our selfish desires do rise up, even winning out now and then.

Verses 19-21 contain a lengthy list of the actions we can take that are produced by “selfish motives.” At first read I thought I’d just pick out a few of the most common of these 17 actions but now I am struggling to pick a few that rise to the top. These 17 are all part of our current culture and are all therefore potential sins for us all. Yes, how we need the Holy Spirit to ever guide us. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, the divine in us and the human in us are often opposed to each other. They do pull in opposite directions. As we invest in our faith – study, prayer, worship, fellowship, service… – may you build up the divine within each of us. What we “feed” will grow stronger. Guide and bless our daily walk with you, ever leading our journey of faith. Amen.

The Battle with Self

Reading: Galatians 5:13-21

Galatians 5:17 – “A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires.”

In Galatians 5:13 Paul reminds the believers that they have been “called to freedom.” Having committed themselves to Jesus Christ, they have died to their old self and have been made new in Christ. They were freed from their old ways and from the power of sin and death. Through grace they are forgiven and made right with God – again and again. Paul warns the believers against returning to their selfish ways. Grace was and is not given so that one can indulge and indulge. Instead Paul calls them away from selfishness and into service through love. This call will fulfill the command to love neighbor as self.

Paul then draws a sharp contrast between living in the way of the Lord and living in the ways of the world. These two ways stand in opposition to one another. He puts it this way in verse 17: “A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires.” We know from our own life experiences that this is a constant battle. Our inherent selfishness is always calling us to love self. The Spirit is always calling us to love God and other. The Spirit calls us away from doing “whatever you want to do.”

Paul gives us quite the list of things we do when motivated by selfish motives. This list of 16 behaviors reveal many issues in our world today. We see many of these selfish actions on display each day. And, if we’re being honest, there are several on Paul’s list that we struggle with daily. This is why surrender of self is so important. Guided by the Spirit, we will be called to  selflessness instead of selfishness. Living the way of Jesus, we will build the kingdom of God both in this time and place and in our hearts. Doing both, we await our eternal inheritance. May it be so for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord God, we ask for your Spirit presence in the battle between self and the call to love you and neighbor. On our own we struggle so. The impure thoughts, the unkind words, the selfish actions – they rise up so quickly. Counter this, O God, with the power of the Spirit. Moment by moment, call us to your will and ways. Amen.

Path of Righteousness

Reading: Proverbs 16

‭Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride comes before disaster, and arrogance before a fall.”

Today’s reading contains mostly examples of how to live in alignment with God’s will and way. Verses 1 and 9 summarize this idea well. In these verses we are reminded that although we plan our path using our hearts, it is God who answers our plans and who secures our plans/path. The sage reminds us that God “tests our motives” too. Are our plans and the desires of our hearts pure? Are they aligned with God’s heart?

Many of today’s verses speak to answering this question. If we commit our work (and our lives) to God, then our plans will succeed. If we see and work towards God’s purposes, if we walk the right and good road, then God will be glorified. If we seek wisdom, then we will have insightful speech and can offer enhanced teaching. Verse 31 reminds us that we’re long-term projects: “Gray hair is a crown of glory.” Eventually this is found “on the path of righteousness.”

There’s a bit of practical advice in today’s verses. Honest scales and balances are God’s way. Integrity and honesty matter in God’s world. Therefore, “better a little with righteousness than great profits without justice.”

And there are warnings today too. It is important to remember the outcomes of wicked or evil choices. The Lord “detests” arrogance and pride, evil deeds, and slanderous and gossipy speech. All of these behaviors run against God’s will and way and against God’s plans and purposes for our world and for our lives. Yet these sins are ever before us, tempting us to walk the world’s path. With God’s strength and presence, may we instead choose to walk the path of righteousness. May it be so for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord God, it is so easy, so tempting, so alluring to simply choose the way and path of the world. So, God, pour out your Spirit’s wisdom and power, enabling us to choose your path of righteousness. Amen.
