The New Family

Jesus claims all followers as His family.  Ina sense, our church family is often a second family for some people.  For a few, it can be their only family.  In Jesus’ day, choosing to follow Him would mean leaving your family roots.  Your Jewish family would not understand or would maybe shun you in extreme cases.

This could happen today but it is much less likely.  The choice of distancing is usually ours.  Becoming a follower sometimes forces these choices as we set aside relationships that are not healthy or conducive to our new life.  It can be a hard choice at times.

As Jesus claims us into this new family, we gain a new sense of hope, love, belonging.  The troubles of life are easier to deal with.  The love seems more genuine.  Many times it feels like we are truly home.  May His presence in our lives and our presence in the lives of His family be strong in our life.

Deep, Wide, and Full

A song I like has these lyrics: “Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more; Where grace is found, is where You are.”  Sin is a constant battle in our lives.  But our reality as children of God is that His love is deeper than our sin could ever be.  When we allow sin to separate us from God, it is always us that keeps that separation.

We choose to be in a time of separation from God when we refuse to acknowledge or repent of our sins.  Sometimes we truly do not know we are sinning, especially when our faith is immature.  But as we grow, we come to see things as sin that we never did before.  In these times, the refiner’s fire is at work in our lives.

At other times our earthly side will rise up and will lead us into sin.  Usually we know we are headed down a road we should not be on, but turn away on our own.  If we call out to Jesus, He will turn us.  But sometimes we don’t call out.  Even then, forgiveness is still available when we turn, repent, and seek His grace.

There are times too when we just do not seek forgiveness.  Either we justify our own sin or we deem another is unworthy of our forgiveness.  Particularly in these times we need to remember that we will be judged according to how we judge others.  Forgiveness is a matter of the heart.  May our hearts be like God’s – deep, wide, and full of love!

Amazing Love

The psalmist cries out to God and He strengthens him.  The psalmist’s reaction?  Praise.  He is delivered from a time of trial and he exalts God’s love and care for him.  There is an element in the psalm of the writer feeling unworthy of God’s love and attention.

I can relate.  At times God is present and active in my life and it amazes me.  Even at times when I drifted a bit, I can look back and see God’s presence in my life.  He was still right there with me.  As I look back on my seasons of not following Jesus closely, it amazes me that He was faithful then too.

At those times and points I certainly did not deserve His love.  There must have been someone more worthy of it.  Yet God certainly was faithful and steadfast.  For this I too lift up a shout of praise.  For this I am grateful.  For this I am amazed.

This stumbling block of not feeling worthy is not all that uncommon.  I think a good number of people look at themselves and think some version of “not a sinner like me.”  Many can relate to this at point sin their life.  But God’s love and faithfulness are not contingent upon us.  Thank God!  If not, we would all be on the outside looking in.  Yet we are not.  This day may we find one on the outside.  May we share our love and God’s love unconditionally.  Radically.  In a way that makes them stop and think.  May we be a part of another experiencing God’s amazing love this day.

Pure Love

Only God loves us purely.  Only God meets all our needs joyfully.  Only God wants the very best for us.  Only in His promises do we find forgiveness, peace, hope, and contentment.  Only through God’s selfless love.

For us, this should be the love we return and share with others.  But we lose focus on our true love.  Our eyes and our heart drift.  Soon we look to the world instead.  Our wants draw us to work more for the newer thing or the greater want.  Our pursuit of worldly pleasures leaves us hungry for more.  Our new position only drives us to seek a higher one with more power.  Back to work!

Like the Israelites we think this new ‘king’ is just what we need.  Sometimes we lose sight of our true King.  Often, those ‘kings’ we pursue don’t turn our so royal or altruistic.  What we see as a king can enslave us and trap us and make us see life and our priorities from an ungodly perspective.  We find ourselves always on the treadmill, always saying “just a little more”, but it never is enough.

Only God loves us purely.  One significant or tragic event or life change and we wonder how we got to where we are.  We question why the world seemed do important when all the really matters is God and His love.  But we don’t need to get there.  We can stop and anytime and focus back in on God.  Focus in on the only one whole loves us purely.  We are God’s priority; may He be ours as well.

Loved That Much

“For God so loved the world…”  Just by prompting you with those six words, you probably can finish the verse.  For those that have even just a few years of church, these are familiar words.  But not to everybody.  After Tim Tebow wore ‘John 3:16’ on his eye black in the national championship game a few years back, over 90 million people googled it.

It is a powerful verse.  It is the gospel message in a nutshell.  On a communal level, sometimes the message is hard to fathom.  When one sees all of the violence, hatred, abuse, prejudice, injustice… in the world, it is hard to understand how God could love this world so much as to send His only Son into it.  But that is just how much He loves this broken world.

Then I think about this verse on a personal level.  When I consider how long I have known and been in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and look hard at my life some days, I think, ‘Even me?’  In spite of all the times I fail to do what you lead me to and all of the times I sin, You still love me?  Yes He does.  God loves all of us this way.  Wow!

The reality is that God would send His Son to die for just one of us.  He loves each of us that much.  But God sent Jesus to all of us – for each and every person who lives or has lived from the time Jesus walked the earth until the time He returns in glory.  For God so loved this broken, hurting, fallen world so much that He sent His one and only Son to save this world.  He loves the world that much.  He loves you and me that much.  Thanks be to God for His great love!!

God’s Voice

God is mighty and powerful.  The Psalm tells us His voice is like lightning, that the earth shakes at the sound of His voice.  In the power of the lightning we do catch a glimpse of the awesome power of God.  It is from this strength that we too can draw strength in time of need.

Sometimes when I think about the vastness of creation it awes me.  There are seven billion people on the earth plus countless animals and other creations of God.  And He loves each one of us dearly and knows us each by name.  Our God is indeed a majestic and amazing God!

To me it is one of the mysteries of faith that God can be so big to create this wonderful, ordered world yet small enough to know me.  Sometimes it is hard to begin to comprehend.  But in the end one must accept that He knows me because at times He calls my name, He whispers in my ear, He nudges my heart into action.

In these times God certainly makes His presence known.  He is right here and tangible.  As we respond to the calls, to the whispers, to the nudges, God is offered to another through us.  In the helping hand, in the listening ear, in the comforting words, God can flow from us to another.  The same voice that shakes the earth is the voice that whispers.  May we learn to hear the whispers just as well as the lightning.

Mysteries of God

In the vision shared in Isaiah 6 we find ourselves in the presence of God.  The imagery here is hard to wrap our minds around.  There are winged creatures, the foundations tremble at their voice, and the hem of God’s robe is so immense that it fills the space.

Although it is impossible to understand all of God, it is a good thing that God is so big and powerful that we cannot fully understand Him.  A god small enough for our human minds to fully comprehend would be a small god.  So like Isaiah’s inability to fully describe the vision God placed before him, we too struggle to completely describe God.  This is part of God’s mystery.

In pondering the vastness of God, we too see how limited we are.  We see clearly that we are human, prone to sin and failure on occasion.  As His creatures we are also prone to love, to forgive, to care for one another.  In following the example set by Christ, we come to know the Father a bit better, to understand God a little more.

There are, however, things we will never know.  There are questions that will never be answered.  There will always be aspects of God that we do not understand fully.  One of these great mysteries is His grace.  I do not understand how God can forgive my sins over and over and over but I am surely very grateful that His love is that big.  Living with this blessing of God is also a mystery beyond words.  All I can say is thanks be to God!

Grains of Faith

At times in my faith journey I am like the chaff.  My faith becomes dry, seemingly purposeless.  In those times I too can be blow this way or that.  I feel adrift in these times.  It is easier to be drawn to the things of this world as well.  Yet God always draws me back in.

I want to be like the grain.  We all do.  It is the grain that sheds the chaff so that new life is made possible.  The grain is happy to be and do what God created it for.  Joy is found in fulfilling its purpose.

Some grain is used to nourish others.  It can be used in many ways to accomplish this purpose.  Each of us has a gift or talent to use in some way to nourish our fellow believers.  We are called to use these gifts and talents not for ourselves but to build up the body of Christ.

Other grain is used to yield more grain.  As we plant the Word of God in others, we are sowing seeds of faith.  Each of us has a faith unique story and a voice to use to tell that story.  Each of us has the ability to cast seeds far and wide both with our story and with the witness of how we live our lives.  Our hope is that some takes root and new lives of faith are formed.

God promises to watch over the ways of the righteous.  His promise is to those that love Him and seek to walk in His ways.  It takes sacrifice to give of oneself to help others grow in faith.  It requires the same to sow seeds of faith in others.  God’s love will lead us to do both.  Allow His hand to guide you today.

Know God and His Love

The Law is a long list of do’s and don’ts.  Teh vastness of the Law found in the Old Testament is hard to wrap one’s mind around.  Even our public law code today is long and cumbersome.  In both cases there were or are laws that the common man did not even know about.  Today most people obey the public law because it is for the common good.  Some obey the law to avoid the consequences of not following the law.

Today’s Psalm 1 begins with the don’ts.  Blessed is he who does not listen to the wicked or stand with sinners or sit with mockers.  In then turned to the thing to do: meditate on the laws of God.  Do so and you will yield fruit in season and you will prosper.  For the psalmist, there is reward in following God’s ways.

The same is true today.  Although Jesus looked at the law differently, there is still much value in following the ways of God.  In essence, when asked Jesus boiled all of the Old Testament Law down to two commands: love God and love neighbor.  If one follows these two commands, then all else falls in line.

If we love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength then we see the world as God does.  We see each person in need with compassion.  We see injustice as something that needs correction.  We see equality as something all people deserve.  If we love neighbor as self, then we offer compassion, ensure justice, and seek equality for all.  If we live in God’s love and allow it to pour forth from inside of us, then all will prosper and all will come to know God and His love.

Conquering

Today’s passage is about love.  If we love God, we are His children and we will obey His commands.  If we obey His commands, we will love our fellow man.  The passage even tells us that God’s commands are not burdensome.

They may not be burdensome but they are not always easy either.  To love ALL of my fellow man is hard at times.  Friends and family can put this to the test at times too.  To really live into the command to love others as Jesus first loved us is difficult.

In today’s passage the Greek word used for overcome or conquer is a word usually used in reference to athletic contests.  To succeed in an athletic contest usually suggests victory over someone or something.  In terms of obeying God’s commands, this battle is most often between my flesh that pulls me one way and my relationship with jesus Christ that pulls me another way.In me, this battle often wages.

In looking at loving one another as a struggle that requires conquering, other examples of an athletic contest are involved.  You do not just show up on the day of the contest on your first day.  For many days before the contest you train and practice and test yourself.  You want to be prepared.  Living out our faith is analogous.  One cannot fight Satan’s temptations without the power of the Word of God.  One cannot join Jesus in overcoming the world without putting in the hard work all along the journey of faith.  But through faithful dedication we can conquer.  It is possible to love our fellow man as Jesus first loved us.
