Sacred Places and Spaces

Reading: Genesis 28:18-19

Verse 19: “He called that place Bethel,” [which means ‘house of God’].

Jacob has had a powerful encounter with God. In a dream he has witnessed “the gate of heaven.” He sees the holy angels coming and going. He sees and hears God speaking words of blessing over him. Jacob awakens early the next morning and he builds a pillar or altar, anointing it with oil. He names the place “Bethel,” which translates to ‘house of God.’ Out in the middle of the wilderness, in a place so desolate that he has to use a rock for a pillow, Jacob names the place the ‘house of God.’

Some might think that just the temple in Jerusalem, for example,or the sanctuary in which we worship can be called the house of God. While these holy places certainly can be and often are filled with God’s presence, God is not limited to these buildings or places. For some a holy space might be that campfire ring at that camp – that’s where I gave my life to Jesus Christ. For some it might be that hospital room, the time when they gathered with ___’s family – there they saw the Spirit’s presence. For others it might be in that prayer room at a Promise Keeper’s event in Denver – that’s where a vision about my life was shared with me. For others…

While sacred places and spaces can sometimes be marked by a pillar or returned to periodically, others can only be marked in our memories. We revisit these places – physically or mentally – to remember when God touched our lives. Before reading the prayer, take a quick mental tour of the places and spaces that God touched your life and faith. Then thank God for these blessings.

Prayer: Lord God, there are many places that you have become ‘real’ to me, spaces where you have touched my life and my faith. Each is a touchstone moment – a particular experience when the holy drew close. Thank you for each of these experiences. Continue to be present in my life. Continue to bless me with these God moments, strengthening and encouraging my faith. Amen.

A Home of Love

Reading: John 14: 23-24

Verse 23: “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teachings… We will come to him and make our home with him”.

The word “home” conjures up many memories. It is the place we lay our head down at night. Right now, for me, home is the grey house across the street from the church I serve. It has been filled with our stuff, but what makes it home is the memories created with family and friends and even surprise guests. Many homes are filled with such memories. Each of our memories are built around and upon a relationship. It is these relationships and the attached memories ethat make a house into a home.

The key to our most important relationships is love. The relationships that matter the most in our lives are built upon love. It is love that leads us to be selfless and more concerned with the well-being and happiness of the other. In our passage today, Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teachings”. In our relationship with Jesus, love is demonstrated with obedience to His teachings or commands. The first two commands that we are told to work on were loving God with all that we are and loving our neighbors as Jesus first loved us. Both of these are not always easy to do. That is why God offers us some help. Jesus goes on to say, “We will come to him and make our home with him”. If we love and obey Jesus, He will come and dwell in our heart.

Jesus just waits for us to extend that invitation. Once we do, it is the indwelling presence of Jesus Christ that makes it possible to live in love. The Holy Spirit is given and it leads and guides, it reminds and convicts, helping us to walk in love. When we ask Jesus to make a home in us, we are inviting love to lead us. It is through that love that we build our relationship with Jesus deeper and deeper. May we each love well today.

Prayer: God of love, walk with me today, helping me to be love to all I meet. Make my words, my thoughts, my actions all point to the love of Christ in me. Amen.

Remember and Build

Reading: Psalm 126: 1-3

Verse 3: “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy”.

Psalm 126 is a song of ascent. It would be sung by people as they headed to worship. The opening verses recount how God ended the captivity in Babylon and brought the people back home. The people dreamed of restoring Israel both physically and spiritually. The thoughts of being great once again brought joy and laughter. This Psalm is just one of many that help the people remember how God has been active and present to them. In verse 3 we read, “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy”. Experiencing God’s presence surely brings joy.

The idea of songs leading us to remember and build our faith is certainly something we find in our hymns and praise songs today. Many hymns and songs are full of passages from the Bible and others contain good theology. Often when reading a passage my mind will connect to a hymn or song. Then I find myself singing that passage. Sometimes it works the other way around too. The lyrics remind me of a passage and I’ll read that story or section. Music continues to help us connect to God. Songs can lead to joyful worship and they can bring us comfort, peace, reassurance…

Psalm 126 also tells a personal experience. Among the Israelites there was a strong oral tradition. Through this, the history of the people was passed down through the generations. Their history was the story of God protecting, caring for, leading, guiding, correcting… the people. We also carry a set of stories with us. These too are stories of faith. We can recall times when God protected us, when God cared for us, when God guided us, and so on. These stories help us remember and build our faith as well.

Today, take a few moments to review your memories of when God was present to you. Remember and give the Lord your God worship and praise today.

Prayer: God, you have rescued me from the pit over and over. You have led me through the dry land and through the troubled waters. You have been my peace and my strength. Thank you God for being my “all in all”. Amen.
