Reading: Luke 1
Luke 1:78-79 – “The dawn from heaven will break upon us, to give light to those who are sitting in darkness… to guide us on the path of peace.”

Today we begin Luke’s gospel, “a carefully ordered account.” Luke’s account begins with Zechariah and Elizabeth, two elderly, righteous, blameless, childless descendants from the line of Aaron. Serving in the temple one day, chosen by lottery, Zechariah burns the incense. The angel Gabriel comes to him and tells him of the coming birth of John and of John’s ministry. Questioning the angel’s words, Zechariah is struck mute. Soon Elizabeth becomes pregnant. She praises God for the favor shown to her.
Gabriel next goes to Mary. He opens with, “Rejoice, favored one!” The angel tells Mary that she will conceive of the Holy Spirit and that her son will be called “Son of the Most High.” He will rule forever. Sharing the news of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, Gabriel closes with, “Nothing is impossible for God.” News in heart, Mary travels to visit Elizabeth. Upon Mary’s greeting, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy.
Mary praises God in verses 46-55. Her “song” begins with praise for the favor that she’s been shown and then shifts to Jesus and his ministry. He will show mercy to all, will scatter the arrogant, and will fill the hungry with good things. Mary returns home after three months and Elizabeth gives birth. People think the boy should be named Zechariah, but she declares that his name is John. Using a tablet to write, Zechariah confirms this. He can now speak and he offers prophetic words.
In verses 68-79 Zechariah praises God for help and deliverance coming through the “mighty savior.” He speaks of John’s ministry – “a prophet of the Most High.” John will preach about being saved through the forgiveness of sins. And he will prepare the way for the Lord. Of Jesus, Zechariah prophesies, “The dawn from heaven will break upon us, to give light to those who are sitting in darkness… to guide us on the path of peace.” Christ is on the way!
Prayer: Lord God, what a beautiful story! Connecting back through the prophets to the plans laid before creation, we hear of your love for us. We rejoice in the vastness of your love. We celebrate your good plans for us and for all who call on Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thank you for the light that continues to shine in the darkness. Amen!
