In Spite of…

Reading: Isaiah 28-31

Today’s reading is largely judgment against Israel and Judah. Isaiah condemns their wayward leaders, their decisions to trust in anything but God, and their choice to ignore his/God’s words. There is also hope found in these chapters. God will one day lay a cornerstone, a firm foundation. And God’s compassion and mercy will win out in the end.

In chapter 28 Israel refused to hear Isaiah’s words. They act like it is baby talk – senseless babble. God will treat Israel’s prayers and cries for help the same way. Israel will not escape the coming flood. God says, “I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line.” By these standards Israel falls woefully short.

Isaiah turns to Judah’s fate in chapter 29. Yes, the drive will come. There will be mourning and lamentation in Jerusalem. But God will save them. The enemy “will be like a dream.” They will die in the night. Even with this rescue, the lip service will continue and their hearts will be far from God.

Judah instead turns to Egypt in chapter 30. This misplaced trust will lead to rebellion and then to defeat. Their sin will be like “a crack in a high wall.” This misplaced trust will lead the wall to suddenly fail. And even though swift defeat and time in exile will come, God will again show mercy and compassion. God will redeem and restore. God will spare and rescue. God will provide. Assyria will fall.

This too is our experience. In spite of our sins and failures, in spite of our wandering and disobedient hearts, God remains faithful to us too. Thanks be to God, our redeemer and rescuer.

Prayer: Lord God, it is amazing that even though your people turn to anything and everything except you, you remain steadfast and faithful. This too is our reality. As weak and sinful and idolatrous as we can be, your compassion and mercy are always greater still. Thank you God for being our sure foundation, our rock of refuge. Amen.

Playing Our Part

Reading: Ephesians 4: 1-6

Verses 5 and 6: “There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism”.

Paul writes today about unity within the body of Christ – the church. Unity almost sounds like a foreign concept. Unity almost feels like an impossible dream. We seem to divide and separate over the smallest of things. Paul is seeing the churches he founded in and around Ephasus beginning to have fissures and cracks.

Inviting those in these churches to “live a life worthy of the calling”, Paul reminds them of some virtues to practice: humility, patience, gentleness, peace… To these he adds belief. In verses five and six he writes, “There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism”. Paul sees the church universal, not the church divided. Paul envisions the unity brought through Jesus Christ, not any divisions. I believe the same is still possible today. There are core beliefs that all churches have regardless of their denominational flavors: God, the creator of all things, sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to live out his love and to die to defeat the power of sin and death, paving the way for the salvation of our souls. You may word this or parts of it differently, but the ideas are the core of our faith.

The body of Christ can make the choice to live into unity instead of choosing division, to live into the core beliefs instead of accentuating differences and things that divide. Unity begins with each one of us – in our churches, then in our communities, then in our world. May we each commit to playing our part to bring unity to the body of Christ.

Prayer: Lord God, grant me the heart required to build unity. Lead me to elevate and value our core beliefs over our minor differences. May Jesus Christ become more of my focus. May our unity bring Christ the glory. Amen.

God Remains

Reading: Psalm 42: 6-11

Verse 8: “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is within me – a prayer to the God of my life”.

Psalm 42 is an honest Psalm. The psalmist looks deep within and admits the hurt and pain and then asks God, why? Why must I be downcast? Why must my soul feel so disturbed? Where are you God? These are honest, heartfelt questions. They are questions we have all felt like asking before. In fact, if we are feeling like asking them now we can be sure that there are people around us who feel this way.

Even though there is no shortage of hurting in our world, we are reluctant to bring this to light with our friends and especially with our God. We do not like to share what we feel is bad news. We do not want to reveal our cracks and weaknesses. We fear driving away our friends. So we try and hold it in. We try and bottle it up. And then there is God. God is the God of love and light and hope. How could I bring this to God? We can and do seek relief or guidance, but to lay our hurts and pains bare before God feels as if we are being too exposed, too vulnerable, too weak…

In verse 8 we read, “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is within me – a prayer to the God of my life”. The psalmist chooses to remain connected to God day and night. Even though he is struggling and is full of questions and hurt, he stays connected. In the prayer that is the Psalm, he asks the questions. Why God? Why? And God’s response? God listens. God hears. There is no immediate resolution, no quick answers. But there is a connection to God, a relationship that is alive and well. God wants to walk with us always – whether we are full of joys, lost in sorrows, or anywhere in between. This is the message of Psalm 42.

The psalmist closes with hope. He is in the valley and has invited God into the valley. God is there. He also knows that the eternal God will remain. “I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God”. We are never alone. God remains.

Prayer: God, for those who feel disconnected and troubled today, help me to enter their valley and to be present. Help me then to be love and light and hope. Guide me to share your abiding presence with another today. Amen.
