Building God’s Dwelling

Readings: Exodus 35, Exodus 36, Exodus 37, Exodus 38, Exodus 39, Exodus 40

Exodus 40:33-34 – “When Moses had finished all the work, the cloud covered the meeting tent and the LORD’s glorious presence filled the dwelling.”

Today’s six chapters cover the construction of the tabernacle. To accomplish this monumental task God and Moses call for a free will offering. So great is the generosity of the people that Moses finally has to say, “Stop!” In total the people brought 2,200 pounds of gold, 7,500 pounds of silver, and 5,300 pounds of copper/bronze – not to mention the cloth, yarn, gemstones, wood, spices… The census was taken. 603,500 men give their half shekel to the sanctuary of God.

Leaders are appointed and the work begins. Men and women contribute. It is a community effort. This project is like a lot of church projects. Generous hearts and willing hands are needed. As it was then so it is now: the people are the heart and soul of the community of faith. The work is done exactly as the Lord has commanded in Exodus 25-31. Every detail is done exactly as the Lord desired. What an example of obedience and attention to detail. In this way it reflects the creation story.

The work is done and the tabernacle is erected. Everything finds its place and the priests are blessed. Moses blesses the people for their work just as God blessed creation when that task was completed. In verses 33-34 of chapter 40 we read, “When Moses had finished all the work, the cloud covered the meeting tent and the LORD’s glorious presence filled the dwelling.” Exactly one year after Israel was delivered from Egypt, the tabernacle is finished and God’s presence comes to dwell among the people. This is the fullest expression of God’s presence in the Old Testament. It expresses God’s desire to be with all people. This desire continues today. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, you were present in and through this magnificent process. You opened hearts and hands to give and serve. Through this your glory was revealed. Continue to be present in and through us, O God. Continue to open our hearts and hands in service to you, O Lord Almighty. In and through us may your glory be revealed! Amen.

All for One Lord

Reading: Mark 9: 38-41

Verses 39-40: “Do not stop him… for whoever is not against us is for us.”

If you were given the chance to describe Jesus in three words, which words would you choose? There are many words that could be used to describe Jesus. All of our lists might not be the same. My list and your list could change in a month, depending on what life has brought or on how faith has been active in our life.

Today my three words would be love, servant, and compassion. What would your three words be today?

Maybe a word or two is similar, maybe not. I was at a celebration of life service yesterday for a man who followed Jesus closely in all he said and did. The words I chose today reflect the image of a follower of Jesus that I saw in John these past twenty or so years. Yesterday I learned that his walk with Jesus was longer than that. As his children and grandchildren spoke it became clear that John walked with and shared Jesus a long time. What events or experiences in your life shape your expression of Jesus or the words you would choose to describe him?

In our passage today there is some conflict between the disciples and a man who was driving out demons but was not one of them. If I saw someone ministering to another, sharing the mercy of Jesus, would or should I stop them because mercy wasn’t on my list today? No! Just because our expressions of faith or the place we worship or the denomination we affiliate with isn’t exactly alike, it doesn’t limit our ability to share Jesus with others. We are all part of the body of Christ. We are all working towards the same end game. We are all called to bear fruit. In Christ may we all be for one another.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to be an encourager of different expressions of faith. Jesus Christ speaks into individuals many different ways, drawing each into a personal relationship. In all I say and do may this remain the ultimate purpose: bringing others to Christ. Amen.

Give Thanks, Sing Joy!

Reading: Psalm 107: 17-22

Verses 19-20: “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble… He sent forth his word and healed them”.

In the opening verses of Psalm 107, which we read yesterday, we hear of the depth of God’s love and care. It is a love that is unconditional and unending. In today’s verses from this Psalm we see an expression of that love. In verse seventeen we read that some have turned away from God. This is a road we all have gone down and will continue to go down on occasion. We become foolish and rebellious and then we often suffer the consequences. The Israelites who had wandered finally cry out to God. They are in distress, near to death. Perhaps we do not wait quite that long, but we can get stuck in our sin – either too proud to admit we need help or to deep in our guilt and shame to approach our holy God.

Again, yes once again, God demonstrates his faithfulness. In verses nineteen and twenty we read, “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble… He sent forth his word and healed them”. God healed them and rescued them from their place of distress and despair. The Israelites again received God’s unfailing love. When we cry out we too will be healed. We too will be rescued from whatever place we have wandered to. God’s love will save us. Like the psalmist and the Israelites, may we give thanks to the Lord our God and may we sing songs of joy for his unfailing love. May we rejoice in the Lord always!

Prayer: Lord God, when I wander you always call me back. Your Holy Spirit guides me to the place of repentance. There you cleanse and restore me. Thank you, God. Amen.
