Live Righteously, Even When…

Reading: Habakkuk 2:1-4

Habakkuk 2:3 – “There is still a vision for the appointed time; it testifies to the end; it does not deceive.”

In the remainder of Habakkuk 1, God responds to Habakkuk’s complaint about justice being warped. This response does not ease the prophet’s level of lament and concern over the current situation. In fact, it heightens the prophet’s angst. Habakkuk really questions how a good God could use an evil foreign nation to end the injustice and idolatry of Judah.

Turning to chapter 2 today Habakkuk declares, “I will take my post.” Using the familiar image of a watchman, the prophet lets God know that he will stand guard, keeping watch, listening for God, seeking God’s next response. There is a resolve here, built upon a trust in God. Habakkuk expects God to answer. Considering that God’s last response was the opposite of helpful, this resolve is remarkable.

Starting in verse 2, God does respond. So true are God’s words, God instructs the prophet to clearly write this vision to come on a stone tablet. In verse 3 we read, “There is still a vision for the appointed time; it testifies to the end; it does not deceive.” God has a plan. The plan will unfold in God’s time, according to God’s will, way, and purpose. The plan has an end-game nature to it and God has a 10,000 foot picture to the plan. This is God’s word, therefore it will not deceive.

God then reminds Habakkuk that some (most?) people desire “truly audacious” things. There will be these folks in this present age. But the righteous, God says, they “will live honestly.” They will trust in God as they wait upon God’s word. They will live righteously, assured of God’s plans and purposes, even when they are not yet clear. May this too be our walk of faith.

Prayer: Lord God, in moments of lament, in times of suffering or angst, it can be hard to wait upon you. Patience and trust can be elusive. When we find ourselves there, Lord speak into our hearts and minds. Through the Holy Spirit, build our trust, bolster our faith, deepen our resolve. Thank you for your faithfulness, O God. Amen.

The Path of Life

Reading: Psalm 16:7-11

Verse 8: “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

Our passage today begins as yesterday’s began, with praise to the Lord. David celebrates God’s presence in his life just as Peter did. In verse 8 David writes, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Here he expresses that faith is a choice. David chooses to receive counsel and instruction from God day after day. He chooses to keep God front and center – “always before me.” Because David chooses God again and again, his faith is assured and strong. He trusts that God will always be there for him.

David rejoices again in the next verses. His “heart is glad” and he knows God’s protection is his: “my body also will rest secure.” For David, his faith is holistic – mind, body, and soul. David’s faith involves all of his life, both in the present and in the future. Mirroring the inheritance that we read about yesterday, David rejoices that the Lord has “made known the path of life” and filled him “with joy in your presence” now and “with eternal pleasures” that are sure to come one day. His faith is not just holistic, it is total and complete. David practices a faith that rests on the Lord’s presence here and now and it trusts into God’s eternal promises for his future.

The God that David connected to, walked daily with, and trusted with all of his being is the same God that seeks to be in the same relationship with you and with me and with all people. Setting the Lord ever before us, we will not be shaken. May we choose the path of life, rejoicing daily in the living hope that comes through faith in the Lord.

Prayer: Lord God, draw me to you morning by morning, keeping me ever before you. Fill me daily with your presence, growing my faith and trust day by day. Turn me to you in all circumstances, for there I can stand secure and strong. Amen.

Our Salvation

Reading: Acts 4: 11-12

Verse 12: “Salvation is found in no one else”.

Peter makes a bold proclamation – salvation is through Christ alone. He is remembering the words Jesus himself said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This bold claim asserts that faith in Christ is the only way to eternal life. All other paths end in condemnation. For all of its love and mercy and grace and forgiveness… this is Christianity’s hinge point. “Salvation is found in no one else”.

Belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is essential to gaining eternal life, but the offer of a relationship and of belief is not exclusive. Jesus made it clear in how he lived his life and in his teachings that all who are willing to profess faith in him will be received into his kingdom. Jesus ministered to all, regardless of who or what they were. Prostitutes, adulterers, rebels, thieves on crosses – all were within his love. Jews, men, women, rich, poor, young, old, Samaritan – all were within his love. Did all accept his love? No. Did all enter into a saving relationship? No. Did he call out to all he met? Yes. Does Jesus call out to all people today, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, occupation…? Yes. Do some still reject Jesus as Lord and Savior? Absolutely.

As ones assured of our salvation, how should we respond to the answers to these questions? We should respond as the good shepherd would. Love should lead and guide all we say and think and do. Grace and mercy should abound in our lives. All should see and experience our humble and sacrificial servant’s heart. Everyone should see the life-transforming power of Jesus Christ active within us. May Jesus, our salvation, use each of us to bring others to the gate of the sheep fold.

Prayer: Loving God, use me today as a conduit of your love and grace. In and through me may others see your son, the giver of salvation. Amen.
