Reading: Acts 16:9-15
Acts 16:14b – “As she listened, the Lord enabled her to embrace Paul’s message.”

Sometimes we feel a nudge or hear a whisper from the Holy Spirit. It might be to send a text or to make a phone call. It might be to go check in on a neighbor or to stop and engage the person on the street corner. It might be to start a new outreach or to reimagine a ministry that has grown stale or tired. It might be to take a look deep within and then to make the needed change in our life. Or… It might be to leave in the middle of the night for a distant place so that you can share the good news.
In our passage today Paul receives this last kind of nudge. He has a vision and is told to go to Macedonia to “help us!” Paul responds immediately (what an example) and makes his way to Philippi. On the Sabbath day Paul and companions seek out a place to pray. There is a reason. If he’s been sent to share Jesus with others, the logical place to start is where other religious people might be gathering. There are women gathered at the river to pray. One is Lydia. We read, “As she listened, the Lord enabled her to embrace Paul’s message.” She feels the nudge. She responds and is baptized. Lydia welcomes Paul and companions into her home, providing a base of operations for the missionaries.
When God nudges us there is surely a plan in play. Just as God guided Paul after he responded, so too will God guide us as we send that text or visit that neighbor or ponder that ministry. With trust and faith in our good and guiding God may we step forward in service.
Prayer: Lord God, sensitize us to the nudges and whispers. Give us ears to hear and hearts to respond. Build up in us a faith and trust that will enable us to be sharers of the good news of Jesus Christ. Amen.
