Humbly Walk

Reading: Proverbs 16

‭Proverbs 15:3 – “The LORD’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on evil and good people.”

In verses 28 we read that a righteous heart thinks before answering while the wicked heart blurts out evil. Our words really matter. The sage also shared that the sensitive answers turn back wrath while offensive words stir up anger. Similarly, patient people calm strife while hotheads stir up conflict. Our words affect others. Let our words be carefully considered.

When our words are wholesome, they bring others life. When we speak with wisdom we spread knowledge. But with unwholesome speech there is no knowledge. This kind of speech breaks the spirit – and the heart. Our words affect others. Let us speak words of truth and love, hope and wisdom.

If we are wise and careful with our words then we reveal a close walk with God. God loves those who pursue righteousness and whose words are pure (in alignment with God’s will and way.) God detests those who lay evil plans and who walk the path of wickedness. Speaking of the consequences the sage writes, “God snatched the arrogant one’s house” while watching over and preserving the widow’s home… May our actions and words be pure.

The sages also touch on the “why” concerning the pursuit of righteousness. We’re reminded that having “a little” while fearing the Lord is better than “great reward” with turmoil. We’re reminded that to “eat greens” surrounded by love is far better than “a plump calf” surrounded by hate. There is much to be said for peace, contentment, simple joys. Today’s readings closes with this gem: “The fear of the Lord is wise instruction, and humility comes with respect.” May we humbly Walk before the Lord who is worthy of our respect and of our love and of our obedience. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, as our words really matter, guide our words. Help us to speak words that build up, that encourage, that spread love and life and faith. Fill our hearts, Lord, with your presence, for there we find joy, hope, love, contentment, and peace. Yes, God, may it be so. Amen.

As Long As You…

Readings: 2nd Chronicles 14, 2nd Chronicles 15, 2nd Chronicles 16

2nd Chronicles 15:2 – “The LORD is with you as long as you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but…”

Asa’s reign fills chapters 14-16. Asa is a good king who seeks to walk in God’s ways and to lead Judah to do the same. Good, however, is not perfect. Following Abijah’s kingship and his sound defeat of Israel, Asa experiences 10 years of peace to begin his reign. He removes all of the foreign altars, shrines, pillars, and poles. He builds fortified cities to strengthen Judah.

After 10 years the Cushites come against Judah. They outnumber Judah almost 2:1. Asa turns to God, asking God to help the weak. He declares their reliance on God. The Lord strikes the Cushites and Judah wins a great victory. Judah collects a great amount of loot and plunder.

It is at this high point that the prophet Azariah comes. He begins by saying, “The LORD is with you as long as you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but…” We know what comes after that “but…” Azariah closes this word from God with an encouragement to be brave, to not lose heart. This word leads Asa to remove all idols. All Judah gathers, joyfully and wholeheartedly entering into a covenant with God. They declare that those who refuse to seek God will be out to death.

In Asa’s 35th year Israel attacks. Asa seeks an alliance with Aram instead of seeking God. Aram attacks Israel, ending that threat. But Hanani the seer comes with bad news. Because Asa did not seek God, war will now be the norm. In anger Asa throws Hanani in jail and takes his anger out on “some other people.” What a far cry this is from repentance.

Asa’s reign ends with continued disobedience. Good but not perfect – just like us. In illness Asa seeks help from doctors instead of from God. In our times of need, where do we turn other than the Lord?

Prayer: Lord God, as we seek to be faithful and obedient, help us to remove the shrines and idols that we set up in our lives. Give us the bravery and the faith to remove these other gods. Fill us with your Holy Spirit power so that we can confidently rely on you alone. Strengthen and encourage us in our times of need. Amen.

Fully Poured Out

Readings: 2nd Kings 22, 2nd Kings 23, 2nd Kings 24, 2nd Kings 25

2nd Kings 25:21 – “So Judah was exiled from its land.”

Today’s reading begins with Josiah. While repairing the temple, the instruction scroll is found. Hearing its words, Josiah rips his clothing in anguish and sends folks to inquire of the Lord. He recognizes how far Judah (and Israel) had wandered from the Lord. Disaster is coming soon, says the Lord. And yet Josiah sets out to love God with all his heart, being, and strength. The covenant is restored. All of the shrines, altars, temples, poles… are removed. They celebrate the Passover. And Josiah dies in a battle with Pharaoh Neco.

Jehoahaz’s short reign in followed by Jehoachin. Fulfilling God’s word to Josiah… King Nebuchadnezzar and Babylon’s army arrives. In addition, raiding parties from many local tribes damage Judah. After three months, Jehoachin surrenders. All of the temple and palace treasures are hauled off, the temple items are cut up, and most of the people are taken into exile. A handful plus the poor are left behind to manage the crops. Newly renamed Zedekiah is left to rule. After 11 years, he rebels against Babylon. A new siege leads to a severe famine in Jerusalem. Zedekiah tries to escape but is caught. He watched his sons die and then is blinded, chained, and hauled off to exile in Babylon.

Guard commander Nebuzaradan oversees the burning of the temple, palace, and homes of Jerusalem. He oversees the Chaldeans tearing down the entire wall. The poor are left to farm the land. In 25:21 we read, “So Judah was exiled from its land.” All is in ruins. God’s anger has been fully poured out.

2nd Kings closes with a small happy note. After 37 years in prison in exile, Jehoachin is paroled by new king Awil-merodach. He allows Jehoachin to eat at his table.

Prayer: Lord God, perhaps the high point in Judah since the days of David and Solomon are followed by the great fall of Judah and the ruin of Jerusalem. This brings with it feelings associated with Holy Saturday. Today is a solemn day of final introspection and reflection as we close the season of Lent. It is much like the time in exile will be. Lead and guide us, O Lord, meld and mold us, remake us even, so that we can walk faithfully in ways. Amen.

A Powerful Spirit

1st Kings 5:15 – “Now I know for certain that there’s no God anywhere on earth except in Israel.”

King Ahaziah falls and sends a servant to a foreign god to seek news. Elijah intercepts him and sends him back, asking Ahaziah, “It is because there’s no God in Israel?” This will be a persistent question. Three times Ahaziah sends men to Elijah. The first two groups die as Elijah demonstrates God’s power. Showing mercy to the third group, Elijah goes and repeats the earlier question. Ahaziah dies and Joram becomes king. He soon faces a rebellion from Moab. While this trouble is brewing Elijah is taken home to heaven. He tries to shake Elisha. Prophets along the way remind Elisha that Elijah is about to be taken. Elisha persists as they travel to Bethel and Jericho. At the Jordan, Elijah parts the water with his coat. On the other side Elijah asks Elisha what he wants. It is “a double portion of your spirit.” He does see Elijah taken up in a whirlwind, this receiving the blessing. Elisha picks up the coat and performs the first of many miracles.

As war brews, Joram recruits allies. They head out to battle Aram but soon run out of water. Elisha is summoned at King Jehoshaphat’s request. As prophesied, pools of water appear and a foolish Moab is defeated. Next, Elisha saves a widow through the miracle of the oil. Then he receives great hospitality and in return a son is born to the woman. But he dies. She is upset with Elisha. He comes and, through God’s power, the boy lives again. Two good miracles follow, bringing Elisha’s total to 8. Elijah offered seven miracles.

Next, Naaman comes to Samaria. The great general seems healing. He ends up at Elisha’s front door. Angered that Elisha doesn’t even come out, Naaman is ready to head home – still sick. A servant calms him. Completely healed, he says to Elisha, “Now I know for certain that there’s no God anywhere on earth except in Israel.” As an act of faith, he brings home dirt so that he can worship God on soil from Israel. What great faith!

Aram again attacks Israel but Elisha’s gift keeps Israel one step ahead. Learning of why, the king of Aram sends the army to capture Elisha. God is on Elisha’s side. The Arameans are struck blind and led into the middle of Samaria. Instead of killing them, Elisha instructs the king to feed them and send them back. This act of mercy ends this skirmish. But soon Ben-hadad invades and lays siege to the capital. A great famine follows. The story of his people eating their children causes the king to get angry at Elisha. He is blaming God for what is happening. Elisha is the easier target of his anger.

God rescues them again. Four lepers discover that the Aramean camp has been abandoned in haste. In the night, God made them think that a huge army was coming against them. They fled in great fear. The king doubts the news, but investigates and finds it true. God has rescued them once again.

After saving the Shunem woman from another famine, Elisha goes to Aram. Ben-hadad is I’ll and hears that Elisha is there. He sends Hazael to inquire of his fate. He will recover but he will not live. An emotional Elisha tells Hazael that as king he will do great violence to Israel. He questions this at first yet goes and assassinates Ben-hadad. Hazael becomes the next king of Aram.

Prayer: Lord God, we see your powerful spirit at work, even as it shifts from Elijah to Elisha. The new prophet continues to walk in your ways, leading and guiding Israel. You remain present through Elisha. We ask today that this same spirit – a spirit that is with all who believe – that this spirit would empower us to live in ways that witness to your power and presence in our world and in our lives. Use us to make you known. Amen.

Mercy Over Violence

Readings: 1st Samuel 21, 1st Samuel 22, 1st Samuel 23, 1st Samuel 24

1st Samuel 23:14 – “Saul searched for him constantly, but God did not hand David over to Saul.”

Today we read about Saul’s pursuit of David and his soldiers. David first goes to the priest at Nob, Ahimelech. He gets bread and a sword from him. The priest knows nothing of the conflict between Saul and David. One of Saul’s servants, Doeg, is there. When Saul finds out that Ahimelech helped David, Saul summons him and his whole household. He pleads his case. But in anger, Saul orders their deaths. It is Doeg that slaughters them all, save one son, Abiathar. He escapes and reports everything to David. David invites him to stay with them.

The Philistines attack a nearby town and David inquires of God about defending it. Yes, yes, God says. David’s soldiers aren’t so sure. They’re in hiding. Following God’s direction, though, David and his soldiers attack, winning another decisive victory. He then flees into the wilderness. There, David and his soldiers are almost trapped by Saul, but another Philistine invasion draws Saul away.

Continuing to move, David evades Saul. And then David has his chance. Saul ducks into a cave to relieve himself. David and soldiers are hiding deeper in that cave. He sneaks up and cuts off a corner of Saul’s robe. David refuses to attack or kill Saul, the Lord’s anointed. David comes out of the cave and calls out to Saul. He explains the choice he made. Saul realizes that God is with David. He acknowledges that David will be king. Saul asks David to spare his family when he is gone. For a second time, David extends mercy. The violent one is humbled by the one who is merciful.

Prayer: Lord God, lead me to be a person of mercy. May my choices always be on the side of love. Amen.

Imperfect But Usable

Readings: Joshua 6, Joshua 7, Joshua 8

Joshua 6:38 – “Don’t be angry with me… Please let me make just one more test.”

Today’s chapters focus on Gideon. In Gideon we see faithfulness to God right alongside his battles with doubt, fear, anger, and pride. We experience these things in our walks of faith. Like Gideon, we want to obey God, but often stumble over our own will and ways. More than anything, though, in these chapters we see that God can use Gideon’s flaws to ultimately work out God’s plans for Israel. God can and will do the same for you and for me.

The people have sinned and God allows the Midianites to cruelly oppress Israel. They cry out. God sends a prophet who reminds them, “You have not obeyed me.” Then God’s messenger calls Gideon. He is reluctant. He has excuses. He tries God’s patience. At one point Gideon says to God, “Don’t be angry with me… Please let me make just one more test.” God works through all of his tests. Satisfied for now, Gideon calls for an army. Yet fear persists. God allows him to overhear a dream which restored his courage. God then tests Gideon, whittling his army of 32,000 down to 300. Credit must go to God. Pride rises up in Gideon as he gives the battle cry: “For God and for Gideon.” Following a wild plan of God, similar to Jericho, victory is won. God’s plan is complete. Yet Gideon chooses to pursue the enemy kings.

In Gideon’s pursuit he asks the people of Succoth and Penuel for bread. They deny Gideon and his army any bread. He threatens them. Soon he captures these two enemy kings and executes them – revenge for killing Israelites. He returns to Succoth and Penuel, exacting violent revenge here too. Pride and anger rule in his heart. Yet when asked later to be Israel’s ruler, he states, “The Lord rules over you.” Apparently he is not part of this “you” though as he collects gold earrings and makes a priestly vest. This trap leads straight to idolatry and the continuing downward spiral of Israel. More on that tomorrow.

Prayer: Lord God, help us to learn both from the good and the bad that we see in Gideon. Help us to be faithful and to follow your plans. Help us to see, though, when it becomes about us and our plans. Keep us from the perils of sin. Guide us to walk in your ways. Amen.

Again and Again

Readings: Joshua 3:7-31, Joshua 4, Joshua 5

Joshua 3:15 – “Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD. So the LORD raised up a deliverer for them.”

Today’s readings establish the cycle that we find in Judges: Israel sins, God’s anger leads to foreign oppression, Israel cries out, God raises up a judge, Israel wins the battle, peace returns. As today’s reading begins the people worship other gods. Eight years of oppression comes. The people cry out and God raises up Othniel. God is with him and he leads Israel to victory. There is then 40 years of peace – until Othniel dies.

Sin and then oppression return. After 18 years Israel cries out. God sends Ehud. He assassinates Moab’s king and then leads Israel to victory. There is peace for 80 years. During this time Shamgar rescues Israel from the Philistines. Ehud dies and sin returns. Oppression lasts 20 years. Sisera and his 900 iron chariots cruelly oppress Israel. They cry out and God raises up Deborah, one of only four female prophets in all of the Old Testament. She sends word to Barak, who has apparently heard God’s call but won’t act. He agrees to lead the army – if Deborah comes along. She agreed but foretells the honor of victory going to a woman.

Barak leads 10,000 soldiers drawn from Zebulun and Naphtali, the main areas of oppression. God gives them the victory. Sisera flees on foot and finds refuge in Jael’s tent. He falls asleep, exhausted, and Jael kills Sisera, driving a tent stake through his head. The enemy commander dead, Israel wins a complete victory.

In chapter 5 we read “Deborah’s Song.” It is really a duet with Barak. The song recalls the troubles and the victories. The tribes that did not help are questioned – where were you? God is credited for the victory – along with Jael. Sisera’s mother longs for his return. There will be peace for another 40 years.

As I consider the cycle that we see today and will see again and again, I acknowledge that this is a cycle I am familiar with personally. I am grateful for the grace that Israel also experienced over and over.

Prayer: Lord God, at first I think, how can Israel go there again and again? And then I realize I do too. That pride, that desire for control, just to name a couple O God, they keep coming round. God, by the power of your Holy Spirit, guide me past these sins that entrap me over and over. God, I need you in this battle. Amen.

When Will They Learn?

Readings: Numbers 11, Numbers 12, Numbers 13, Numbers 14

Numbers 14:8 – “If the LORD is pleased with us, he’ll bring us into this land and give it to us.”

Chapters 11-14 are a great summary of the Israelites time in the wilderness. It has it all: complaint and grumbling, anger and punishment, faith and doubt, trust and fear, intercession and forgiveness, victory and defeat.

Our reading begins with a little grumbling. God’s fire burns against this unnamed complaint, burning the edges of camp – a sign of warning. Some “riffraff” ignore the warning. They allow their craving for meat to lead to grumbling and a longing for those “better days” in Egypt. Moses is frustrated and overwhelmed. God responds by giving him leaders to help bear the weight of leadership. And God brings waves and waves of quail. God will be so abundant that “it will come out of your nostrils and nauseate you.” God’s anger then burns against the riffraff. They are buried there in the desert.

The complaining turns personal as Aaron and Miriam question Moses’ leadership. They are jealous. They claim a connection to God that only Moses has. Miriam is struck with a skin disease. Aaron begs for Moses to intercede. Miriam must bear the shame of their sin for seven days. After her isolation period she is healed and returns to camp.

Chapters 13 and 14 cover the exploration of the Promised Land and the people’s lack of faith and trust. The spies return with huge grapes and stories of huge people and fortified cities. Caleb tries to rally the people. Rumors ensue and soon the people are discouraged. The people once again long for Egypt – or at least to die in the desert instead of by the sword. Joshua then speaks, trying to rally their faith. He says, “If the LORD is pleased with us, he’ll bring us into this land and give it to us.” That is a really big “if.” The people want to stone Joshua and Caleb.

God’s anger burns hot as God decides to start over with just Moses. Moses intercedes again and God’s anger relents. But there will be a consequence: those 20+ will indeed die in the desert. They will wander for 40 years – one year for each day of exploration. Bitter mourning follows this news. And yet a group decides to enter the Promised Land anyway. Moses warns them. They are struck down by the people of Canaan.

Prayer: Lord God, how clear are the results of faith versus fear, of obedience versus disobedience. I start to think, when will they learn?! And then I realize that we’re still learning, that I’m still learning. Thank you, Lord, for your unending love and for your enduring faithfulness. You give mercy and grace that we and I don’t deserve. Yet it flows generously and abundantly. Thank you, God. Amen.

God with Us

Reading: Genesis 4, Genesis 5

Genesis 4:10: “The Lord said, ‘What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.'”

Chapter 4 contains the story of Cain and Abel – Adam and Eve’s first two sons. Living outside of the garden because of their parents’ sin, Abel works as a shepherd and Cain as a farmer. These two brothers bring an offering to God. Cain brings some of his crops and Abel brings the firstborn, including their fat portions. God sees Abel’s offering as “favorable,” angering Cain. At times we all come to this place that Cain came to – realizing that our offering to God was less than what it could or should have been. Maybe it was a half-hearted effort with that neighbor. Maybe we came to worship with a really poor attitude. When the realization comes that we fell short, we too can get angry. It’s always harder to look within.

Even though God warns Cain – “sin will be waiting at your door ready to strike” – Cain still allows his anger to smolder, leading him to murder Abel. God knows yet asks, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.” God is not searching for the answer but for remorse and repentance. None is found. Cain even doubles down, denying any knowledge of what has happened to Abel. As a result, Cain is moved further from community. He is to be a wandering nomad. Punishment at least brings a hint of remorse. Even here, God’s grace remains present. Isolated, alone, vulnerable, God marks Cain with a sign, protecting him from harm. Like Cain, as bad as we can become, God remains with us.

Chapter 5 brings a list of descendants. Many are just names. They lived a long time before the flood – 930, 912, 962… All but Enoch died. He was “taken up,” presumably because he walked faithfully with God. As sin continues to grow, this rapidly becomes less common. The list of singular descendants branches out at Noah. Each of his three sons will have a role in the ongoing story of God.

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for always being with us, even in our sin. Thank you for not giving up on us and for always trying to work us towards your good plans. Please forgive us when we go astray, pursuing other things. Thank you for your love and grace. Amen.

Change IS Necessary

Reading: Mark 1:1-8

Verse 3: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

Returning to Mark 1 today we delve a little deeper into the “repent” part of John’s message. Although we tend to place the practices of introspection, confession, and repentance in the season of Lent, these practices also have a place in Advent. They are the focus of our Lenten preparation. They are part of our Advent preparation.

By our nature we are prone to sin. We are naturally selfish and this leads us to be greedy or controlling or lustful or prideful or… These emotions are enablers on our path to sin. So we need to hear the call to repent, even now in this season of hope and peace and love and joy. The call to repent makes us a bit uncomfortable. First, no one likes change, especially when it is forced. And that is what repentance is really about – forcing our naturally selfish nature to be unselfish. And, second, no one likes to hear that they are living wrong, that they are living unfaithfully. To hear this implies a need for a change. And change is necessary.

In Advent we prepare the way in our hearts for the coming of Jesus. In his birth we celebrate the light coming into the world. It is the light of Christ that shines into the darkness of injustice and inequality, poverty and want, isolation and loneliness, grief and anger, violence and war, and so much more. It is the light that beckons us into these places and spaces. This too is part of the call to repent – to help our world and one another to repent of these maladies. In these places and spaces change is also necessary. As we allow the light of Christ to shine brighter in our own hearts, may we also take that light out into the world, bringing healing and wholeness to our broken and dark world.

Prayer: Lord God, may our journey be both inward and outward. As we grow in our love for you, may that love overflow out into the world. As we seek to change within, may we also seek change in our world. In and through us may your light shine brightly, bringing healing within and without. Amen.
