Rescuer, Deliverer, Redeemer

Reading: Luke 1:76-79

Luke 1:77 – “You [John] will tell his people how to be saved through the forgiveness of their sins.”

As we continue in Zechariah’s prophecy today we read about the role that his son, John the Baptist, will play in the coming of the Messiah. We also learn more about who and what this Messiah will be. John will go before the Lord “to prepare his way.” Zechariah is channeling his inner Isaiah here, as John will also do during his ministry. Out there in the wilderness, along the Jordan River, John will tell his people how to be saved through the forgiveness of their sins.” Calling God’s people to a baptism of confession and repentance, John will prepare people’s hearts to receive the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

With these words, Zechariah is looping back around to the Savior who delivers and rescues God’s people from their enemies. John calls folks to battle with their sins, the enemies within. This call will next be echoed by Jesus. And after sending his Spirit, this call will be echoed down through the generations of believers, echoed in our hearts. This call is the “light to those sitting in darkness.” Whether from John, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, the call to live out the covenant of love shines a light on our sins and the darkness that they create in us and in the world. This light and the change of heart that it leads to guides us to step out of “the shadow of death.” Freed from the power of sin and death through Jesus Christ, we are guided to walk on “the path of peace.” Thanks be to God for our Savior, deliverer, and redeemer!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for the voice that calls out to us, inviting us to come before you, confessing and repenting of our inner darkness, committing to walk on your path of light and peace. Keep our hearts ever open to your still, small voice that whispers words of love. Free us, O Lord, to be people whose love helps others to know the Savior. Amen.

A Plan Unfolding

Reading: Luke 1:68-75

Luke 1:69-70 – “He [God] has raised up a mighty savior… just as he said through the mouths of his holy prophets long ago.”

By nature we are social beings. We were created by God to be in community. While each of us enjoys some solitude from time to time, we crave human interaction. A large part of this involves expressing ourselves, our thoughts, our emotions. The average person does this mainly through speaking about 10,000 words a day. Imagine being silent for a few days. For me that would soon begin to feel like a heavy weight. What would that feel like for you? Now, imagine being silent for nine months.

As we turn to Luke 1:68 today, Zechariah begins to speak for the first time in nine months. He had been struck mute by God about 840,000 words ago. Zechariah did not believe the angel Gabriel when he told the old priest that was having a son. The angel told him that his son would “bring many Israelites back to the Lord.” What news to share! But he cannot. After all of this silence, what are Zechariah’s first words?

Zechariah first announces that the words of the prophets from long ago have been fulfilled. A Savior has been born! The priest turned prophet tells the people that God has remembered the covenant and will rescue Israel “from the power of our enemies.” Recalling the times in exile and in the wilderness, those enemies were mostly within – selfishness, greed, idolatry. As we continue tomorrow, Zechariah will next speak of the role that his son, John the baptizer, will play in God’s unfolding plan. The unfolding plan continues today. You and I are a part of that plan.

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for remembering your covenant and setting in motion the redemption of all of creation. Thank you for sending the one filled with the spirit of Elijah to prepare hearts to receive your son, the Savior. Lord, fill us with the Spirit’s power, using us today to call people to change hearts and lives. Use us to call people to the Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Present in the People

Reading: Haggai 1:15b-2:5

Haggai 2:5b – “My spirit stands in your midst. Don’t fear.”

Fear is an emotion we often feel. When in a dangerous situation, when enemies are all around, when stepping into the unknown – these are but a few of the things that cause fear to rise up in us. The prophet Haggai speaks to a small remnant that has returned from exile in Babylon who is dealing with these three fear-inducing situations. Zerubbabel, the governor, led the remnant back and started to rebuild the temple, but threats from the groups who inhabited the land during exile derailed the building project.

Chapter 1 of Haggai isn’t exactly encouraging. The prophet challenges the people. They are living in nicely built homes while God’s house lies in ruins. Their return has been difficult. For example, they’ve planted crops but are hungry. The harvest has been meager. Haggai informs them that this is because they’ve been neglecting God. This pronouncement induces more fear in the people. But it is a good fear – a healthy respect, a reverent awareness, a motivator.

As the people return to working on the temple, Haggai addresses them in chapter 2. After speaking into their present reality, he speaks words of encouragement, “Be strong,” three times. Through him God encourages them to work, because “I am with you.” Then, in verse 5, God says, “My spirit stands in your midst. Don’t fear.” These words of Haggai remind the people that God is present – building or no building. God is present in the people of God doing the work of God. The same will be true for us. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, gathering to worship and to do other churchy things is wonderful. But you clearly call us beyond the walls of our churches. Like Jesus, who spent the vast majority of his time and energy ministering and teaching outside of the temple and synagogues, move us to be your hands and feet out there in the world. Amen.

Radical Love

Reading: Luke 6:27-36

Luke 6:35 – “Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return. If you do, you will have great reward.”

Jesus defines behaving as God’s children by loving our enemies, by doing good to those persons who hate us, by blessing the people who curse at us, and by praying for the folks who mistreat us. He continues on, explaining how these actions become real. For Jesus, love is not a sentimental feeling. It calls us to offer the other cheek, to give our cost and our shirt, to give money without seeking or expecting repayment. To materially support those who hate, curse, and mistreat us? This is a deep and encompassing love that Jesus calls his followers to live out.

Why would Jesus call us to such a radical love? First, it is the love that he demonstrated in both his ministry and in his death on the cross. More practically, in verse 31 he says, “Treat people in the same way you want to be treated.” Jesus calls us to this radical love as a means to change hearts and to change culture. Loving in this way will attract attention and will raise questions in other’s minds. When this kind of love is given to our “enemies” it shows that this love is deep in our hearts. It is not founded upon the other person’s behavior but upon Christ in us. When we love all people with a radical love, then the compassion of the Father will then be our compassion. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, how great your love is for us. It is beyond measure and past comprehension. When we ponder this we are left in awe, able only to muster a meager “thank you.” Lord, empower us to reflect this love to others, drawing them towards that place of awe. In this way may you be glorified and praised. Amen.

Radical Love

Reading: Luke 6:27-31

Luke 6:31 – “Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.”

Today’s passage begins with “But I say to you.” This is a familiar phrase Jesus uses, especially in the Sermon on the Mount. As Luke employs this phrase, he adds to it. His phrasing includes “to you who are willing to hear.” This is Luke’s way of getting his readers, including us, ready to take in and wrestle with a difficult teaching.

In verses 27 and 28 Jesus encourages us to “love your enemies… do good to those who hate you… bless those who curse you… pray for those who mistreat you.” This kind of love is counter-cultural. It calls the followers of Christ to act in a way that surprises the world. Instead of returning hate for hate, which is the norm, do good instead. Radical.

The next two verses provide real world examples. To offer the other cheek, to give your shirt too, to not expect repayment – these too run against the cultural norms. Our culture teaches us to hit back, to hold tightly to all that is ours, to charge high interest. Not so with Jesus. Here he call his followers to a self-sacrificial, others first kind of love. This kind of radical behavior is something that also surprises the world.

Our reading closes with a well known maxim: “Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.” This kind of love is given regardless of who the other person is or isn’t, regardless of what they’ve done or not done. This radical love comes from within us. It is motivated by Christ’s example and it is empowered by his Spirit. It is a love for all people. May this be a live we embody and practice daily.

Prayer: Lord God, what a call we hear today: love all people, especially when it is hard or costly or both. Your counter-cultural and counter-instinctual call to sacrificial love is challenging, but so powerful. Walk with us and enable us to overcome evil with good, hate with love, greed with generosity. Use us to change the world. Amen.

Love Your…

Reading: Luke 6:27-36

Luke 6:35 – “Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return. If you do, you will have great reward.”

Our passage today comes from a section titled, “Behaving as God’s Children.” The title alone alerts us to the fact that Jesus is about to lay down some serious expectations. Verse 27 reveals the challenge inherent in the word to follow: “But I say to you who are willing to hear.” So our question as we begin: Are we willing to hear these words of Jesus?

Diving in, Jesus says, “Love your enemies.” For Jesus this entails doing good, blessing, and praying for those who hate, curse, and mistreat us. Reminiscent of Saturday’s reading from Matthew 5, here too Jesus says to go above and beyond, offering the other cheek or the shirt off our back. Summing up verses 27-30, Jesus says, “Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.”

As if the first instructions were not enough, Jesus next asks some questions that speak to loving our enemies and treating others as we want to be treated. If we love those who love us or if we do good or lend to those who do good or lend to us,  Jesus asks, “Why should you be commended?” He points out that even the sinners do these things. Continuing, Jesus advises us, “Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return. If you do, you will have great reward.” Expect nothing in return. Act as God acts, being kind and compassionate.

These words, these instructions, are very challenging. They are counter-cultural. As the notes in my study Bible say, “This love is never conditioned upon the other person’s behavior; it is motivated and empowered by its giver and not its receiver.” May we love well from the deep reservoir of God’s love that resides in each of our hearts. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, you speak words today that are hard to hear, hard to really live out. Your words to love our enemies call us deep into your upside-down kingdom. These are world- and life-changing words. Walk with us, O God, transforming both our lives and our world. Such is the great reward – becoming more like Christ. Amen.

Complete and Generous

Reading: Matthew 5:38-48

Matthew 5:48 – “Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also must you be complete.”

Today we focus on two of Jesus’ “But I say to you” statements. These two are the last of six such teachings, where Jesus unpacks and dives deep into how to truly live out these laws and commands. These six teachings flesh out Jesus’ statement about coming to fulfill the Law, not to do away with it.

Verses 38-42 unpack the “law of retaliation.” This “eye for an eye” law originally limited revenge or repayment for wrongs. Jesus begins by telling us not to oppose those who seek to hurt or take from us. In fact, Jesus says to go beyond what is expected or required. For example, if someone slaps your right cheek (an act of insult given with the back of the hand,) then offer your left cheek next (an act of love given with the palm.) Jesus says, in essence, love and serve and give when others would seek that eye.

Verses 43-48 five deep into the “law of love.” Jesus extends this law too: love not just neighbors, not just those like you, but love your enemies as well. That’d be that Roman soldier that required you to carry his gear for a mile (Roman law.) Jesus says, carry it two miles. In summation, Jesus says, “Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also must you be complete.” God loves us all completely, unconditionally, without limits or stipulations. Jesus’ command is for us to do the same. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, when much is asked of us, fill us with your love. When we are asked to live or serve those who are difficult or challenging, remind us that you love us even when we are at our worst. Help us, O God, to be generous and complete in our love. Amen.

God is with Us

Reading: Psalm 23:4-6

Psalm 23:6a – “Goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life.”

Today we turn to one of the most well-known scriptures in the Bible as we wrestle with the idea of heaven this week. The 23rd Psalm is a staple during those sacred moments when we gather to celebrate a faithful life well-lived and to comfort and encourage the grieving. These words of David resonate with God’s presence in our lives and with God’s love and care for us.

Verse 4 reminds us that God is present in the “darkest valley.” As we walk through dark moments – pain, grief, loss, illness, unwanted change… – God walks with us. David speaks of having no fear. This comes partly from God’s presence but also from God’s role as protector. The “rod” keeps the physical enemies at bay while the “staff” keeps spiritual enemies at bay.

The idea of a great wedding banquet comes to mind again as we read verse 5. The oil of God’s blessing anoints the head and the cup spills over. Abundance is the norm at God’s table. This brings to mind one of our common understandings of heaven. It is the great feast spoken of by the Prophets and by Jesus.

The idea of heaven on earth flows through verse 6. God, here represented by “goodness and faithful love,” pursues us “all the days of my life.” God is always seeking us out. The Psalm closes with rejoicing. David rejoices over his daily dwelling with God. For us today, this dwelling has become an indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God is with us here and now. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, we are so grateful for your daily walk with us. We are thankful that you not only pursue us but also protect us, guide us, and draw us back to you when we wander. You bless us in so many ways. Thank you for your unending love and care. Amen.

Grace Is Greater

Reading: Romans 3:21-5:21

Romans 5:10 – “If we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies… how much more certain is it that we will be saved by his life?”

As we begin today’s reading, Paul declares that righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, not through the Law. Under the Law, Paul correctly notes “all have fallen short of God’s glory.” But through the ransom paid by Christ, through grace we can be made righteous. Christ did for us what we could never do for ourselves.

Paul turns to Abraham as a model of righteousness. He has faith in God and he acted on that faith. Because of this, God credited Abraham as righteous. He was yet uncircumcised and there was no Law yet given. Through trust and faith Abraham also believed God’s promise that he would be the father of many nations. Abraham was “fully convinced” that God was able and that God would do what God had promised. This too was credited to Abraham as righteous. Paul then turns it personal, reminding us that we too are credited as righteous through our faith and trust in God through Jesus Christ.

Because of the righteousness that comes through faith we have peace with God. Peace comes through the reconciling work of Jesus on the cross. Paul reminds us that while we were weak, while we were still sinners – even while we were enemies of God – Christ died for us. Paul asks us, “If we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies… how much more certain is it that we will be saved by his life?” Sin and death came into the world through Adam. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, grace and eternal life were offered to the world. In verse 20 Paul writes, “Where sin increased, grace multiplied even more.” God’s grace is always greater than our sin. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, faith, hope, trust – the foundations of our relationship with you. Sacrifice, love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, reconciliation – the foundations of who you are. Thank you God for always loving us beyond our sins. Thank you for the gift of Jesus Christ, Savior and Lord. Amen.

As You Walked and Lived

Reading: Luke 6

Luke 6:45 – “A good person produces good from the good treasury of the inner self, while an evil person produces evil from the evil treasury of the inner self.”

Chapter 6 is a primer on the Christian life. On the Sabbath – a day on which devout Jews did absolutely no work – Jesus asks, “It is legal to do good or evil, to save life or destroy it” on the Sabbath? He then heals a man’s withered hand. After calling the 12, Jesus heals many people. Maybe it was the Sabbath, maybe it wasn’t.

Starting in verse 20, we hear the “Sermon on the Plain.” It begins with Jesus telling us that those without now will one day receive. Those who have already received will one day be without. Jesus calls his followers to love, to do good, and to bless and pray for those who hate, curse at, and mistreat us. He calls us to go above and beyond what is asked. His teaching is summed up in what we know as the golden rule: “Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you.”

After pointing out that the world loves those who love them… Jesus calls us to be compassionate as God is compassionate. He warns against judging and condemning. Instead we are to be forgiving. Jesus says to give and it will be given to you. The golden rule not only applies to our relationships with each other but to our relationship with God too.

We’re also warned about self-deception. Deal with the log in your own eye, Jesus says, before trying to remove the splinter from a neighbor’s life. In this way a good tree will produce good fruit. This is because “A good person produces good from the good treasury of the inner self, while an evil person produces evil from the evil treasury of the inner self.” When we build on the solid foundation of Jesus, filling ourselves with and living out his words and example, then the storms can’t and won’t shake our faith. May it be so for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord God, we are called to do and be good in the world. We are called to give of ourselves with no strings attached. Our love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness is to be universally and unconditionally poured out. We are to walk and live as Jesus walked and lived. Yes, Lord, may it be so. Amen.
