Praise Be to God!

Reading: Psalm 148

Psalm 148:13 – “Let all of these praise the Lord’s name, because only God’s name is high over all.”

Psalm 148 is a song of praise to God. The word “praise” appears 11 times in these 14 verses. This call to praise goes out to all parts of our world. In verses 1-6 the psalmist invites the heavens to praise God. The sun, moon, and stars are called to praise God because they were each created at God’s command, set in place “always and forever.”

Verses 7-10 call on the created world to praise God. From sea monsters to hail and snow, to mountains and hills, to animals wild and tame – all are invited to praise the Lord. These too are the work of God’s hands. We are the focus of verses 11-12. The psalmist calls “every single person,” whether young or old, to praise God. We too are the beloved work of God’s powerful and mighty hands. Like the stars and the trees, we would not exist if not for God forming each of us in the womb.

Psalm 148 closes with a universal plea: “Let all of these praise the Lord’s name, because only God’s name is high over all.” Our creator is reigning on high. God’s majesty is over all the earth! For all that we are and for the one who formed us and walks with us today, we shout with all of creation, thanks be to God!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for your creative power and work that is evidenced by all of creation. Looking within and without we can see your fingerprints on all things. That divine touch continues to shape and form us, to lead and guide us. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

It Will Happen

Reading: Daniel 2:40-45

Daniel 2:44 – “The God of heaven will raise up an everlasting kingdom that will be indestructible… It will stand firm forever.”

Today’s reading holds Daniel’s interpretation of one part of one of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams. At the start of this dream, Daniel tells the king that his mighty kingdom will fall. In time, the Medes will overthrow Babylon. Then a third kingdom (Persia) will rule for a time. This kingdom too will fall. Starting in verse 40 Daniel begins to prophesy a fourth kingdom, “mighty like iron.”

This fourth kingdom will be powerful and will smash all in its path. But it will also be a divided kingdom. Under Alexander the Great, Greece will rule the known world, including Palestine. Parts of the kingdom will be mighty, remaining loyal to Greece. Other parts will be fragile, turning away from Greece. The fragility will eventually bring down this mighty empire too.

The dream and interpretation suddenly jumps to the time when “The God of heaven will raise up an everlasting kingdom that will be indestructible… It will stand firm forever.” Unlike the Babylonians, Medes, Persians, Greeks, and the Romans… God’s kingdom is not of this earth. This eternal kingdom will be built upon “the stone,”one cut “not by hands.” This stone will be a “mighty mountain” and will fill “the entire earth.” The story line has jumped to the time when all things will be made new. In our frame of reference, this will be the time of Jesus Christ’s return.

To later read these words – during the reign of the Greek or Romans or during our present time – these words offer hope. Then and now, as people suffer under “power over” leadership, these words remind us of a kingdom yet to come, of a kingdom of love and grace, of mercy and reconciliation. As we read today, it “will happen in the future.” Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, today there is much division and hate, great fear and suffering. Power is loaded over those who are ‘different’ or are perceived as ‘outsiders.’ In response to this reality, we pray, come, Lord Jesus, come. Be that in your second return or in sending us out to stand for you, may it be so. Amen.

Hearts and Lives

Reading: Acts 1 and 2

Acts 1:8 – “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Turning to Acts today, Luke first connects this second volume to his first: the Gospel of Luke. The story then continues as the risen Jesus appears and teaches for 40 days. His time culminates with the giving of the disciples’ mission: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” The new community of faith will take Jesus’ message to the world. Jesus ascends to heaven and two angels tell his followers that Jesus will return in the same way (one day.)

The 11 apostles return to Jerusalem and devote themselves to prayer. Peter then addresses the group of about 120 about replacing Judas. Twelve are necessary for their eternal assignment of judging the tribes of Israel. Two men are nominated. Both Justus and Matthias have been with them since the beginning and both men witnessed the resurrection. After prayer, Matthias is chosen by lottery.

On the day of Pentecost a mighty wind fills the place where they are gathered. What looks like flames alight on each believer, empowering them to speak the good news in many languages. All of this draws an international crowd. Peter rises and speaks to both the amazed and the skeptical, offering scriptural teaching about this moment. Many are troubled and are moved to ask, “Brothers, what should we do?” Echoing the words of both John the Baptist and Jesus, Peter says, “Change your hearts and lives” by being baptized, repenting of your sins, and by receiving the Holy Spirit. About 3,000 accept the invitation as God brings them into the community of faith.

Our reading closes by describing this new community of faith. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to living as a community, to sharing what they had, and to prayer. This is a snapshot of what the church of Jesus Christ is supposed to be. May it be so for us all.

Prayer: Lord God, pour out your Spirit upon us – both as individuals and as faith communities. Fill us with your love and grace, with your power and presence, with your uniting spirit, and with your generous heart. Change our hearts and lives, using us to witness to others so that they too may change hearts and lives, coming to a saving faith in Jesus. Amen.

Praise God!

Readings: Psalms 145-150

‭Psalm 145:8 – “The LORD is merciful and compassionate, very patient, and full of faithful love.”

We close our time in the Psalms with Psalm 145 and then the “Hallelujah” Psalms, 146-150. These five begin and end with “Praise the Lord” – our translation of the original Hebrew: “hallelu” and “yah.”

Psalm 145 calls for us to praise the Lord, from one generation to the next. This praise is “proclaiming your mighty acts.” Doing so leads the worshippers to “rave in celebration.” That’s a phrase we don’t find often in the Bible! In verse 8 the psalmist writes, “The LORD is merciful and compassionate, very patient, and full of faithful love.” Because of these traits, the psalmist can also write, “The Lord is close to everyone who calls on him.” True and true!

Psalms 146-150 celebrate God’s mighty acts, each with their own focus. Psalm 146 celebrates the God who brings justice to the oppressed and who frees the prisoners, the God who protects the immigrants and who straightens the bent. Psalm 147 celebrates this compassionate heart of God and then adds thanks for God’s generous hand in nature. Psalm 148 calls all of creation to praise God – sun, moon, and stars, hills and trees, all creatures, including “kings of the earth and every single person.” Psalm 149 calls for praise and expresses the belief that the execution of justice will bring honor to God and God’s people. Lastly, Psalm 150 closes with a snapshot of worship. Any and all instruments will be used to praise God. May that include our voices!

Prayer: Lord God, yes, we are called to praise you, to lift your name on high. Lead us to join all of creation in worshipping your holy name. Open our hearts to pour forth praise from our lips. All glory and honor and praise to you, O God! Amen.

God Is Still God

Readings: Psalms 73-75

‭Psalm 74:1 – “Why does your anger smolder at the sheep of your own pasture?”

Psalm 73 faces a reality that we all deal with from time to time. The psalmist envies the wealth and blessings of the wicked. The psalmist states, “I’ve kept my heart pure for no good reason.” He feels as if he stayed innocent for nothing – except to be weighed down by hard work. We can feel this way. We can question if holding onto our faith is really worth it. We can be jealous of what others have: wealth, power, health, popularity. The psalmist then enters the sanctuary. He prayed. He understood that the wicked will perish and that God is always with him. He declares that God is “my heart rock and my share forever.” Hallelujah!

Communal tragedy has struck in Psalm 74. The enemy has won, the temple is burned down, no prophet is left. The psalmist asks the “how long?” question: “Why does your anger smolder at the sheep of your own pasture?” A shift comes in verse 12. Remembered are the mighty works of God’s hand. The psalmist calls on God to remember the covenant. He cries out, “God, rise up! Make your case!” Prove to us and to the world that God is still God.

Psalm 75 closes today’s readings. It “balances” Psalms 73 and 74. It is a promise that God’s justice will come. It is a reminder that God will bring this person down (the wicked) and that God will raise up that person (the righteous.) It is a Psalm that trusts deeply in who and what God is and will be. May we too live righteous lives, trusting in our God of justice and righteousness.

Prayer: Lord God, when our flesh longs for the things of this world, remind us of your everlasting love. When envy or jealousy rises up in our hearts, remind us that you are a jealous God. And when tragedy strikes, remind us of your peace that passes all understanding. Lead us to rest and trust in you. Amen.

Sing, O Israel

Readings: Psalms 64-68

‭Psalm 68:9 – “You showered down abundant rain, God; when your inheritance grew weary, you restored it yourself.”

Psalm 64 begins with a prayer for protection and finishes with a celebration of God’s acts. Psalms 65-67 join in the celebration of God’s mighty acts. We close with Psalm 68, mostly more praise but with some petitions for God to act. As we draw close to the end of Book 2, we see the shift towards more praise and less lament.

Psalm 64 begins with prayer of protection against the evil doers’ words or “arrows.” What an appropriate descriptor. The psalmist trusts that God will respond with an arrow too. Then the righteous will rejoice in the Lord. The rejoicing continues in Psalm 65, where David is grateful for God’s listening ear and forgiving heart. David also celebrates how God can “calm the roaring sea.” How we too are grateful for this gift! The Psalm closes with thanksgiving for God’s provision of abundant flocks and grains. Yes, God is good.

Psalm 66 focuses on God’s deeds and power. This power has tested and refined them – a good process. A good one for us too. Not always enjoyable but always fruitful. The psalmist’s response? Offerings given and promises kept, a joyful response! The thanksgiving extends in Psalm 67 to include the gift of salvation. It is to be made known to the nations. Then the nations of the world will better understand the fair judgments that God renders and will better receive the guidance that God desires to give to all of the nations of the world.

Closing today with Psalm 68, the Psalm begins with a grand sweep of God’s acts: scatters the enemy, cares for orphans and widows, sets prisoners free. The psalmist celebrates God’s provision and love: “You showered down abundant rain, God; when your inheritance grew weary, you restored it yourself.” The Psalm closes by remembering God’s past victories, grand worship, and shows of strength. The psalmist longs for these to return. Remind yourselves through song. Sing, O Israel, sing to the God who gives you strength!

Prayer: Lord God, we too thank you for the many ways that you move in our lives and in our world. We offer you our praise and worship! And we too count on your continued presence. Without you, O Lord, we’d be in trouble. Shower us with your abundant love and provision. Go with us day by day. Amen.

The One True God

Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7

Verse 6: “And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Just over a week ago at youth group, one of our kids asked about the difference between God and the gods of the Greeks, Romans… It is a good place to begin today’s thoughts on Isaiah 9. The gods were limited and they were flawed. Each god was a god of something – war, love, rain, fertility… The gods fought with one another, played cruel tricks on humanity, sometimes had evil intents. These false gods, however, did not cease to exist with the Romans or whoever. They have new names today – wealth, popularity, beauty… – but they continue to lead us away from the one true God. Pursuing these gods limits our ability to fully be who we were created to be. Allowing these gods to drive our decisions and actions yields flawed results in our lives.

God is unlimited and is perfect. In God there is no darkness or evil. God has only good plans for us. God is everywhere and is always present. In today’s passage Isaiah identifies the coming son as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” God incarnate, in the flesh, is all of this and so much more. In our times of indecision and struggle, God gives us wonderful counsel and guidance. In our times of weakness and uncertainty, God gives us mighty strength and holy wisdom. In our times of frailty and humanity, God reminds us that he who was and is and always will be is right there with us in that moment. And in the storms and valleys, God covers us in peace and hope and walks right there by our side.

Today we rejoice in our God who upholds and establishes us. Thanks be to our God who both reigns forever and is present right here in our hearts.

Prayer: Lord God, these titles that we find in Isaiah are so true in so many ways. Yet they are just a small part of who and what you are to and for us. Thank you for your total love and for your complete care for us, your children. Amen.

Praise the Lord!

Reading: Psalm 99

Verse 6b: “They called on the Lord and he answered them.’

As I read Psalm 99, two parts stand out to me. Parts of the Psalm speak of God’s character and this draws us to worship God. The other parts speak of God’s call upon our lives and of how this draws us into a relationship with God.

The psalmist reminds us that God is supreme over all the earth. He or she also reminds us that God is mighty and that God loves justice. Yet God is also a forgiving God. Yes, at times God has some consequences for our “misdeeds.” Because this is who and what God is, we are drawn to worship and exalt God. This is the entry point into a relationship. As our relationship with God begins we are able to call on our God who hears and answers our prayers.

The psalmist provides a few examples of those who called upon the Lord: Moses, Aaron, and Samuel. Before they could call on God, though, they too had to respond to God’s call on their lives. They had to accept the call and make the choice to enter into a relationship with God. The same God continues to reign over all of creation. As we experience God’s character in many different ways we too are drawn into relationship. As this grows we come to trust that God will answer our prayers and cries. This is because God is a God of relationship.

So today and every day may we humbly come before the almighty and all-powerful God of all creation, the personal and intimate God who wants to be in a relationship with each of us. Coming before God, may we worship and praise the Lord our God.

Prayer: Lord God, in power and might you sit enthroned over the nations. In love and grace you reach out for a relationship. You are holy and righteous. And you want to walk daily with me, a sinner saved by grace. I am overwhelmed by your desire to be in this personal and intimate relationship with me. All I can do is praise and worship you for this great love. Thank you, God. Amen.
