The Day of the Lord

Reading: Isaiah 25:6-9

Isaiah 25:9 – “Let’s be glad and rejoice in his [God’s] salvation.

In Isaiah 25 the prophet celebrates the salvation that God will bring. In verses 1-5 Isaiah speaks of God saving Israel from their enemies. Isaiah then celebrates how God has been (and will be) a refuge for all in need. In verses 6-9, our passage for today, the prophet envisions the day when God will bring this age to a close. Isaiah sets the scene “on this mountain,” referring to Zion, God’s holy mountain. On Zion the Lord will prepare “a rich feast” for all peoples. It will feature “choice wines” and “select foods.” It will be the feast of all feasts. Almost all readers or hearers in the ancient world would likely envision the best wedding banquet they’d ever been to – times ten!

Isaiah next writes of God swallowing up “the veil that is veiling all people.” It is unclear what this veil is. Is it the veil that casts evil over humanity’s eyes? Is it the veil that keeps people from fully seeing God? Whatever the case, all people will see clearly, seeing as God fully intends us to see.

In verse 8 Isaiah tells us that death will also be swallowed up. Eternal life will reign. Tears and people’s “disgrace” (sin) will be removed. This day will be a day of celebration and thanksgiving. All people will exult the God who saves. The joyful people will declare, “Let’s be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” What a day that will be! We wait with eager anticipation for the coming day of the Lord!

Prayer: Lord God, we see into your plans today. We see the prophet’s vision for the day when you make all things new. Many have stepped into this vision and more will likely enter their rest before the final day comes. We give thanks for your faithfulness. Fill us with the same faith, allowing us to live out your light and love as we await the day of our eternal salvation. Amen.

The Will to Choose

Readings: John 3:16-16 and 34-36, and John 14:1-7

John 3:17 – “God didn’t send his son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”

John 3:16 is about as well-known as any verse in the Bible. God sent his one and only son into this world, taking on flesh, becoming one of us, so that he could die on our behalf, removing our sins, opening the way for us to enter eternal life. This is a beautiful picture of sacrificial love.

The next verse reminds us of God’s unconditional love: “God didn’t send his son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” God’s first choice is not to be a God of judgment but a God of love, mercy, grace, and salvation. This is what God desires for all humanity, not judgment. God also created humanity with free will or the will to choose. So we can choose to not choose Jesus as our Savior. We can choose to live for self. We can choose to be judged. We can choose to ignore the words of life that Jesus speaks, to ignore the prompting and guidance of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, we invite “the angry judgment of God” upon ourselves.

Jumping forward to John 14, it is a heavy moment. Sandwiched around the command to love one another “as I have loved you” is the news of Judas’ betrayal and of Peter’s denial of knowing Christ. Jesus tells the disciples to not be troubled but to trust in God and in him. He then promises that he will come back for them so that they can be with him in heaven. In response to Thomas’ confusion, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Jesus’ life and example are the way to know God and God’s truths. They are the way to live the life that God intended for us to live, the life here and now that leads one day to life eternal. May it be so for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord God, you sent your son to save and redeem us. You desire this for each and every one of us. It must break your heart to see the one you wove together in the womb, the one you created for relationship with you, choose the ways of the world. Lord, break our heart for what breaks yours. Amen.

Present and Future Reality

Readings: John 5:25-29 and Luke 19:7-10

Luke 19:10 – “The Human One came to seek and save the lost.”

God sent Jesus to save, not to condemn, to give eternal life, not to bring eternal punishment. Today’s readings speak to this and to the reality that salvation is both a present and future reality.

In John 5 Jesus declares that “the time is coming – and is here!” Those who are dead in their faith can hear Jesus’ words and have their faith come to life. This is the present reality. Jesus also speaks into the heaven-hell reality. “All who are in their graves” – the physically dead – they too will hear Jesus’ voice one day. When that day comes, some will be resurrected to life (heaven) and some will be resurrected to judgment (hell.) In the end, we all have a destination. How we live in the present will determine our outcome.

Turning to Luke 19 we enter the story of Zacchaeus. Jesus has just invited himself to Zacchaeus’ house. This causes everyone to grumble. A large crowd had gathered to see Jesus. What could or would he do for them? To choose Zacchaeus, tax collector and known sinner – unbelievable! In response to the crowd or to Jesus’ invitation (or both?) Zacchaeus declares his faith. He speaks in the present. Jesus tells the crowd that salvation has come to Zacchaeus. Jesus adds, “The Human One came to seek and save the lost.” Jesus came to change hearts and lives in the present. Jesus came to save and to bring eternal life to the lost. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, your intent for all people isn’t just to enter heaven one day. It is also for us to experience heaven on earth here in the present – “on earth as it is in heaven” is what we pray each Sunday. Help us to walk daily in faith, being heaven to others so that they too can begin to experience your intent for their lives in the here and now. Amen.

A Heart for All People

Reading: 1st Timothy 2:1-6a

1st Timothy 2:2 – “Pray… so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives in complete godliness and dignity.”

This past week we read passages that spoke of the timeless and eternal truths of God and our faith. We also read some challenging passages that were written for a time and place different from our own. Hopefully both added to our understanding of the Bible, strengthening our relationship with God as well. Today Paul writes to Timothy about another essential practice of our faith.

Paul begins by asking Timothy to pray for all people. Paul understands that God’s call is to all people – so that they can be saved. Understanding that Jesus died to bring eternal life to all people is key to understanding who and what God is. God is generous in love, wide in mercy, deep in grace. Paul encourages Timothy and us to pray for those in authority. In his day, these would be the ones persecuting and harassing the church. This aligns with Jesus’ call to pray for our enemies.

We read the “why” concerning prayer in the last part of verse 2: “So that we can live quiet and peaceful lives in complete godliness and dignity.” Praying brings a peace and a calm to us. It changes our hearts, not just the hearts we’re praying for or about. This changed hearts is reflected in our lives and in our interactions with those we’re praying for and about. We better reflect the godliness and dignity Paul speaks of. These things, in turn, reveal God and Jesus to others – again, those God wants to be saved. May we be people of deep and sincere prayers, changing hearts, beginning with ours.

Prayer: Lord God, open our hearts to your great love, mercy, and grace. May these be the foundation of our prayers and, therefore, our lives. Help us to have your heart for all people. Amen.

High Priest, Mediator, Perfect Sacrifice

Reading: Hebrews 7-9

Hebrews 9:24 – “Christ didn’t enter the holy place… made by human hands, but into heaven itself, so that he now appears in God’s presence for us.”

The focus of Hebrews 7-9 is to establish Jesus as high priest forever, as the mediator of the new covenant, as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. The writer begins his or her case by looking back to Melchizedek, the priest of God who blessed Abraham. He was not a Levite but remains “a priest for all time.” Yes, earthly priests will collect a tithe and will offer sacrifices again and again. But they die and don’t continue serving. The Levitical priesthood, part of the old covenant, offered sacrifices that “can’t perfect the conscience.” The guilt and the shame and the power of sin, they remain.

Jesus came as the “guarantee of a better covenant.” High priest forever, Jesus is “holy, innocent, incorrupt, separate from sinners, raised high above the heavens.” He offered himself, “once for all,” providing his own blood as the blood necessary for forgiveness. This initiated the second or new covenant. Quoting from Jeremiah 31, the author of Hebrews declares that God revoked the old covenant (written under the Law) and prepared for a new covenant (written on our hearts) and sealed by the blood of Jesus. Unlike the old covenant, Jesus’ blood will “wash our consciences clean,” freeing us to serve the living God. Jesus himself was “the sacrifice without any flaw.”

The mediator of the new covenant, Jesus Christ, offers all who are called the promise of “eternal inheritance.” Leading the way, “Christ didn’t enter the holy place… made by human hands, but into heaven itself, so that he now appears in God’s presence for us.” In heaven, Jesus mediates for us, standing for us in God’s presence. We await Christ’s second coming, when he will save and redeem us and our broken world. In this advent season, we say, come, Lord Jesus, come.

Prayer: Lord God, we are so grateful for the gifts you gave us through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through his blood we are forgiven and cleansed, sins washed away, made holy in your sight. Christ did what the old covenant never could do. He made a new way, one that opened eternity to all who call on Jesus as Lord and Savior. Thank you for these gifts. Amen.

All for the Gospel

Reading: 1st Corinthians 7-9

1st Corinthians 9:22 – “I have become all things to all people, so that I could save some by all means possible.”

Beginning in chapter 7, Paul begins to address some of the questions and concerns sent to him in a letter. The first question has to do with sex. Paul declares that a married couple should meet one another’s sexual needs. This reduces the temptation towards immoral sexuality. Paul also adds a caveat about divorce: if an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave the marriage, let them go. Paul then lifts up – but does not command – celibacy. Paul feels that marriage divides a person’s attention. For Paul, celibacy “promotes effective and consistent service to the Lord without distraction.”

In the next chapter Paul addresses eating food sacrificed to idols. For the mature believer, they know idols are not real so the food is fine to eat. But the weak or new to faith might not know this. Paul recommends living in ways that don’t potentially weaken or destroy another’s faith. He notes that one sins against Christ when one sins against a brother or sister. Today one might, for example, invite one who struggles with alcohol to a meeting at a bar. That would fall under Paul’s prohibition.

In chapter 9 Paul writes about being an apostle. There must’ve been a question about paying the preacher’s salary. Paul reminds them that both the Old Testament and Jesus himself taught that the prophet or priest or preacher should get their living from sharing God’s word. Paul chooses to wave this right. Chapter 9 closes with a call to share the gospel with all people and to “run to win.” Paul notes that he has become all things to all people, so that I could save some by all means possible.” All is done with a focus on sharing the gospel. Paul encourages self-discipline as the means of attaining “the crown that never dies” – eternal life.

Prayer: Lord God, guide us to run the race, eye ever on the prize of eternal life. Lead us to also recognize the breadth of the mission field. Walking faithfully with you as our priority, also open our eyes to the ways that we can engage and draw in the lost. May we meet others where they are at, witnessing to your saving power and love. Amen.

The Foundation: Jesus Christ

Reading: 1st Corinthians 1-3

1st Corinthians 1:18 – “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved.”

Paul writes this letter to the church in Corinth to address problems and misunderstandings in the church. Paul begins by giving thanks for their knowledge of Christ and for the spiritual gifts evident in the church. He reminds them that they are in partnership with Jesus Christ.

Paul then turns to the first issue: division in the church. Little subgroups are following different voices: Paul, Apollos, Cephas, or Christ. He reminds the church that they were baptized and came to faith in Jesus Christ. To forget this would empty the cross of its meaning and its message. In 1:18 Paul writes, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the power of God for those of us who are being saved.” The idea of Christ crucified is “a scandal to Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles” (to the world.) To believers, though, it is salvation.

Paul then lifts up God’s wisdom, which was disclosed in Christ’s crucifixion. God chose and chooses “what the world considers low-class and low-life” to reduce what is important to the world to “nothing.” God did this so that faith would depend not on “human wisdom” but on “the power of God.”

God’s wisdom and power are revealed through the Spirit. Once a believer receives the Spirit they can interpret and understand “spiritual things.” But this is a learning and growing process. These Corinthian believers are yet “babies in Christ.” They are still “drinking milk” instead of eating “solid food.” For Paul, this is evident because of the division and infighting in the church. Paul points them to their true foundation: Jesus Christ. He reminds them, “You belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” May this be our foundational truth as well.

Prayer: Lord God, open our minds and hearts to your wisdom and to your will and way. By the power of the Holy Spirit, give us guidance and direction as well as understanding. In all things, may all that we are belong to you alone. Amen.

In Every Way

Reading: Romans 11-13

Romans 12:1 – “I encourage you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to God.”

In chapter 11 Paul addresses God’s people – both the Jews who still reject Jesus and the Gentiles who’ve accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Paul argues that God has not rejected Israel. A remnant remains. They’ve not fallen permanently. In fact, Paul has intentionally been so public about his ministry because he hopes to “make my own people jealous and save some of them.” Paul also warns the saved Gentiles about bragging about their grafted in status. It is the root (God) that sustains them – not the other way around. In the end, Paul believes “Israel will be saved.”

In chapter 12 Paul begins to address behavior. In verse 1 he writes, “I encourage you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to God.” Constantly give self up in surrender to God’s will and way (not to the world’s) and one will become “good and pleasing and mature.” As we do so we live more and more as one unified body, each playing a vital and necessary role. Paul lists prophesying, serving, teaching, and encouraging as some roles. He then elevates love, evangelism, hope, prayer, empathy, and equality as marks of faith. Paul warns against arrogance, revenge, and other evil actions. These are those “patterns of the world.”

Paul addresses our civic responsibilities at the start of chapter 13. Live well under the authority of the government because they have been “put in place by God.” Pay your taxes and don’t be in debt to anyone. And love really well. Paul reminds us that all the commands are summed up in the one to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Our reading closes with a great reminder. Salvation is closer now than ever. So, “Dress yourself with the Lord Jesus” – be like Christ in every way. May it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for our place in your family. Encourage us to see the family as an ever-growing family, as one that seeks to graft in all people. As we walk in faith day by day, nurture us and guide us into a more and more mature faith. Above all, may we love without limit, helping others into the path of salvation and life. Amen.

Believe

Reading: John 11 and 12

John 11:25 – “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Lazarus is the focus of most of chapter 11. He falls ill and Mary and Martha send for Jesus. He stays where he is at. Only when Lazarus has died does Jesus head for Bethany. Many Jews come to mourn. As Jesus nears, Martha hears and goes out to meet him. She says as Mary will later say, “Lord, if you had been here…” They believe that Jesus could have healed their brother. While true, there is a greater plan at work. Jesus tells Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life.” To believe in Jesus leads to eternal life. We will all die in the physical sense as our body passes into death. After weeping with Mary and Martha, Jesus calls for the stone to be removed. This is a test of their faith. Do they believe that Jesus’ power can reach beyond the stone of death?

Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb. Many come to believe. But typical of the division in John, others go to the Pharisees with the news. They fear that a miracle like this will lead to a loss of control, which will lead the Romans to take action. The religious leaders know that Jesus would not play their game. So they decide that Jesus must die. Jesus withdraws to a secluded place for a time.

As the Passover nears, Jesus goes to Bethany. At a dinner at Lazarus’ house, Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume, preparing him for burial. A greedy Judas protests. The next day Jesus enters Jerusalem. A great crowd celebrates his humble entry. The Pharisees lament, “Look! The whole world is following him!” This kingship is different. Jesus speaks of a single seed falling and dying. Only then can it “bear much fruit.” Jesus reminds the people that he came to be light in darkness and that he came not to judge but to save.

Prayer: Lord God, help us to believe when we have not seen. The signs – we can read about them and trust that they happened. Your words is true. Lord, touch us and our lives with your presence and with your Spirit. May we feel the light and life within us, leading us to believe. May we walk daily with your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Born from Above

Reading: John 2:13-3:36

John 3:5 – “I assure you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom.”

As chapter 2 winds down, Jesus goes to Jerusalem. He goes to the temple. It is just before Passover, so the temple would be busy, abuzz with activity. Stepping into this scene, Jesus makes a whip and drives out those selling animals and those converting Roman coins to temple coins. The religious leaders question Jesus’ authority and he responds with “Destroy this temple and in three days I’ll raise it up.” The religious leaders are deeply confused but the disciples will remember these words after Jesus was raised – and they believed.

As Jesus does “miraculous signs” many come to believe. But this is a superficial faith. This is the human nature that Jesus does not fully trust himself to. In chapter 3 Jesus encounters someone wrestling with his faith. Nicodemus comes at night and recognizes that Jesus is from God – because of the miracles. Jesus cuts to the chase, telling Nicodemus that he must be born anew. Clarifying, Jesus says, “I assure you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom.” All people are born of the flesh. To see, to receive, to believe, one must be born of the Holy Spirit too.

Continuing and deepening the conversation, Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Human One (Jesus) must be lifted up just as Moses lifted the snake to bring healing and life to the Israelites. The life Jesus will offer, however, is eternal life. And contrary to popular belief, the Messiah did not come to judge but to save. Judgment will fall on those who fear and reject Jesus’ light.

Our reading closes with Jesus baptizing in Judea. John recognizes this as the sign that he must decrease so that Jesus can increase. The one from above is at work. He speaks God’s truth and gives the Spirit generously. By the end of the Gospel, Nicodemus will receive and believe. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord God, you are indeed generous with your love and grace, with your mercy, and with your Spirit. Through receiving and believing we find the way to eternal life and to life abundant now. Use us today to share these blessings with others so that they too may receive and believe. Amen.
