Possible and Available

Reading: Ezekiel 37:1-6

Ezekiel 37:5 – “The Lord God proclaims to these bones: I am about to put breath in you, and you will live again.”

As we prepare to spend time today and tomorrow in Ezekiel 37, we begin with some framing context and with a few questions. The valley of dry bones, we will learn, represents the nation of Israel’s dead faith. Because of this dead faith, they worshipped false gods, leading to physical death and destruction, followed by 70 years in exile. In light of this, where and how have you and I become disconnected from God? Are there areas of our faith and/or life that are like dry bones? And, how might the breath of God restore life to you and to me?

The opening verses of Ezekiel 37 set the scene. The Spirit brings Ezekiel to a broad valley. As he is led about, he sees that there are “a great many” of these “very dry bones.” An entire nation had been defeated by Babylon. Most died and the survivors were taken away into exile. Despair and hopelessness have grown as the years ticked by. The exiles question the prophets recent words of hope. They desire to return to the land that God once gave them, but…

The Lord’s Spirit asks the prophet if these bones can live. This is a relevant question for Israel, for our nation, perhaps for us as individuals. Ezekiel defers to God. The prophet witnessed the absolute defeat of Israel and he was one of those hauled off into exile. He’s been living in Babylon for many years, speaking to a people who are still far from God. The thought of resurrection feels too big, the idea impossible. So he gives it to God. And God has a plan. God instructs Ezekiel to say, “The Lord God proclaims to these bones: I am about to put breath in you, and you will live again.” This is a statement of faith. God will do this. God will restore and redeem Israel. Then, “You will know that I am the Lord.” How might God be reaching out to restore your relationship with God? How can the Spirit’s breath bring you new life?

Prayer: Lord God, you really can do anything. You are the God of all things, even that which seems impossible. Help us to see and then to trust our dryness and brokenness to you. Remind us once again that because of your great and unconditional love, new life is always possible and available. Deferring to you, lead us to new life as you breathe into our hearts today. Amen.

Healing Brokenness

Reading: John 9:1-17

John 9:2 – “Rabbi, who sinned so that he was born blind, this man or his parents?”

Today’s gospel reading begins with an important question and an even more important answer. The disciples ask Jesus about the root causes of a man’s blindness. It is a question wrapped in that culture’s understanding of disease and illness. Because medicine had not yet provided explanations for blindness, skin disease… the assumption was that sin or some other brokenness in the community caused the illness, disease, plague… To be healed or cured was to be restored to community or for the community to return to wholeness.

In answer to their question, Jesus responds that neither the man nor his parents sinned. It was not a grandparent or great grandparent either. The blindness (and its healing) are an opportunity for “God’s mighty works” to be displayed. Being light to the world and to this particular man, Jesus makes some mud, puts it on the man’s eyes, and sends him to wash in the pool of Siloam (which means “sent.”) The man is healed – he can see. There is some disagreement over the healing. There is concern over when the healing happened. We delve into all of this tomorrow as we press on in John 9.

But today, within the context of the community’s wholeness, we wrestle with the brokenness of our world today. In a world that produces enough food to feed itself many times over, why do many go hungry? What sins cause this? In a nation with the best possible medical care, why do many go untreated? What sin causes this? In a place where there are abundant resources and space, why do we refuse to welcome some in? What sins cause this?

Prayer: Lord God, heal our hearts, heal our nation, heal our world. The sins of some cause many to suffer or to live in scarcity. The desire for the pleasures and riches of this world lead some to turn their backs on the sufferings and injustices of our time. Our own sins of omission result in silence and inaction, allowing evil and darkness to reign. Lord, pour your healing love into our hearts. Use us to engage in healing the brokenness of our world, of our communities, and of our lives. Amen.

We Cry Out

Reading: Psalm 27:1, 4-9

Psalm 27:7 – “Lord, listen to my voice when I cry out – have mercy and answer me.”

These ancient words of David are words we can relate to yet today. Just as David faced evil and people who were against him, today we face these same things. Sadly, this is one of the constants in our world. The desire for power over others and the drive to accumulate more and more has always led to the suffering of others. In verse 1 we are reminded of another constant. God has been and always will be a light in the darkness, salvation in the brokenness, and a fortress in the battle against evil.

In this world of division and violence and oppression we are called to be Christ’s light. This is not always an easy task. Just yesterday the Bishop of the episcopal area in which I serve held a Zoom call to discuss the division, violence, and oppression unfolding in Minneapolis and to talk about our Christian response. The church should be as David describes the temple in verses 4-6. It should be a place of shelter and safety, a rock upon which people can stand. But this is not just about the building. The body of Christ must be these things to the world in the reality of life.

A story was shared yesterday of an elderly man who came to the United States long ago, fleeing the violence of his homeland. He became a citizen and a part of society. This elderly man was pulled out of the shower, taken out into the street in shorts and crocs, with a throw over his shoulders, in sub-zero temperatures, to be questioned. Yes, it feels as if “an enemy encamps against” us. Like David and like many others, we cry out for justice. We cry out for peace. We cry out, “Lord, listen to my voice when I cry out – have mercy and answer me.” Lord, we need you now. O God who saves, be with us now.

Prayer: Lord God, we do cry out – some in our hearts, some in our spirits, some with pen and paper, some in the streets. Whatever your answer to our cries, may we hear and respond. May we say or do or pray or go as we are led. May we be used as you will – as a voice, as a presence, as a supporter… As you work towards justice and peace, O God, lead us to be your co-workers in this fight. Use us to stand with and to watch over and to protect the vulnerable and the suffering. Amen.

Bring the Light

Reading: Isaiah 49:5-7

Isaiah 49:6b – “I will also appoint you as a light to the nations, so that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Continuing in Isaiah 49 today, the prophet shares God’s decision. It is not simply a change of heart. The time in exile prophesied by Jeremiah and others is drawing to a close. The 70 years are up. It is time to “restore Jacob to God.” A group will lead the return to God, then larger Israel will follow, also returning to God. To begin the process of returning to the Promised Land, God has honored the prophet, becoming his strength.

While this brings hope and joy to the prophet, God says, “It is not enough.” Yes, God will “raise up” the tribes of Jacob, and, yes, God will bring home “the survivors of exile.” But this is not enough. God’s plan is far bigger than Isaiah envisioned. God works this way in our lives too. Yes, it is awesome that God has brought your family to Jesus Christ. But then God asks, what about your neighbor and the stranger down the street? And what about “those” people in “that” part of town?

In verse 7 we get the full scope of God’s plan: “I will also appoint you as a light to the nations, so that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” God’s plan is to save all people everywhere. That other part of town? Yes. And the people of our reservations and inner cities and the people on the other side of the world? Yes, yes, and yes! Carrying the light of Christ in our hearts, God’s people are appointed by God to bring the light of Christ to all people. Reading on we see that even kings and military leaders will bow before the Lord. All on account of the Lord. And all because we who are chosen are faithful to our charge. May it be so for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord God, we first ask that the light of Christ would burn brightly in our hearts. Burning brightly may your fire burn away the chaff and sin, readying us to step into the world’s darkness and pain. Use our light to open blind eyes and to soften hard hearts. Use our light to guide others to welcome the light of Christ into their hearts. Amen.

Praise and Thanksgiving

Reading: Luke 17:15-19

Luke 17:18 – “No one returned to praise God except this foreigner?”

As we continue in the story of Jesus healing ten men of their skin diseases, we turn to the second step in the spiritual discipline called the Examen: relish. This step is the expression of gratitude for the way(s) that God has worked in our lives. While I did not notice the subtitle yesterday, today I did. It is this: “Jesus heals a Samaritan.”

All ten men are cleansed of their skin diseases as they make their way to the priest. The cleansing must not have been immediate but somewhere along the journey. At that time, one saw he was healed and turned back toward Jesus. The other nine continued on to the priest to complete the next step: passing inspection so that they could be declared “clean.” This priestly step allowed them to rejoin society, to go back to their old life – to life before disease.

The Samaritan returns, praising God in a loud voice. He falls at Jesus’ feet to express his deep gratitude. This is what “relish” looks like. Jesus then muses aloud, wondering where the other nine are. He points out the fact that ten were cleansed. Jesus then asks, “No one returned to praise God except this foreigner?” The cleansing was the first step in healing the Samaritan. His faith has been deepened because of his experience. His praise and gratitude build up his relationship with God. The other nine were surely grateful for being able to go back to their old life. But then they just returned to their old faith. This is what saddens Jesus. God moved the needle for a moment, then it just went back to empty.

Most of us pray to God all the time. When we’re serious we likely seek to enter into God’s presence (request.) In those instances when God does restore health or open a door or whatever, do we relish what God has done? If so, we begin to experience healing as we move closer to wholeness in our relationship with God. In our daily lives, may we choose to make time to praise and thank the Lord our God.

Prayer: Lord God, how often we are like the nine. We whisper a quick “thank you” and get right back to the buzz of life. O God, slow us down, draw us closer. Lead our heart to fully recognize how you’ve moved or acted, and then guide us to offer our praise and thanksgiving. Taking this time builds our faith, our relationship with you, healing a bit more of our brokenness. Teach us to relish you and all you do. Amen.

Community and Unity

Reading: Psalm 133

Verse 1: “How good and pleasant it is when [all] people live together in unity!”

In Psalm 133 David writes about unity and community. As we begin, though, let us recognize that these concepts have changed a great deal since David wrote these words. Note the [ ] as a glaring example of the difference between who is in our circle and who would’ve been in our circle. In the NIV Bible I use at home, this verse read “when brothers…”. The online version attached to this devo uses “God’s people…” Our understanding of God’s idea of unity and community has been growing very slowly but steadily over the eons of creation. One day perhaps we will grow to love so completely that a circle isn’t necessary any more.

In our world yet today there is division, barriers, walls, brokenness, exclusion, and many -isms that work against true unity and real community. All of these things work against the kind of community that God in Christ spoke of and sought to live out. Modernizing David’s words to reflect this idea of a world without anything that divides us from one another begins to reflect God’s love for all of creation.

The Christian understanding of unity and community should align with Jesus’ words and prayer about “being one” as the body of Christ. In today’s Disciplines devotional Bishop Mokgothu said it this way: “Living together is not just convenient tolerance and political correctness.” This is surface level unity and community. Christ calls us to a much deeper and more authentic living out of community and unity. It begins with real relationships and true acceptance of one another. From there it extends to include the “other” – the poor, the disenfranchised, the vulnerable, the outcast, the lost…

When this is how we practice unity and how we live in community then we will also live into the words of verse 3b: “There the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.” O Lord, may it be so.

Prayer: Lord God, your vision and plan for unity and community is beautiful yet is still unfolding. It is based on a love as pure and generous as your unconditional love. Work in my heart today, O God, pushing my understanding and my practice of who is welcome in my circle. Make my love more like your love. Amen.

God Is There

Reading: Matthew 2:13-23

Verse 18: “A voice is heard… weeping and great mourning… refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Today the story of Jesus’ early days continues. Although Jesus and family flee to safety, many families are not so fortunate. As is still the case today, Jesus’ life is intertwined with ours. Herod, out of anger and fear, has all the baby boys under two killed in and around Bethlehem. This act fulfills a prophecy from Jeremiah 31 that, in part, speaks these words: “A voice is heard… weeping and great mourning… refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” Families and neighbors cry and grieve for the lost children. In their grief, God draws near.

Today in our world children are still the victims of senseless violence. Whether it is a school shooting or a bomb dropped on a neighborhood in Ukraine or gang violence in the city or another tragedy around our southern border, families and neighbors weep and mourn for lost children this very hour. Just as the people of Bethlehem refused to be comforted, so too do mothers, fathers, friends, and neighbors today. To shed tears is to remember, to honor, to celebrate a life. To mourn is the hold on. Weeping and mourning are part of the grief process. Our tears bring healing in time. Our tears are also a reminder of God’s presence with us.

When tears do not stop, when the pain does not cease, when sleep will not come, the only thing we can do is to hold onto God’s presence. There we can sense and feel God’s love for us, right there in our grieving. God is there and understands because Christ walked through the pain and sorrow and brokenness of this world. God is there with us. May we hold onto Immanuel, God with us.

Prayer: Lord God, comfort, o comfort all who are grieving and hurting. Be present to all who mourn, whatever the situation. Enter into their lives just as you entered into this world. Be present in the pain and sorrow. Pour out your love and tender, healing mercies. Bind up what the world has torn apart. And, Lord, lead me to offer presence and peace, comfort and strength, light and love to those who mourn and weep. Amen.

Live as the Light

Reading: Isaiah 65:17-25

Verses 17 and 19: “Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth… The sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.”

Our passage from Isaiah 65 speaks words of great hope and promise. These words spoken to those living in captivity in Babylon would have given them a future to look forward to. In the opening verse the Lord God promised, “Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth.” The new will be a delight to the people of God. They will be glad and will rejoice forever. God will also delight in the people. In this new thing, The sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.” Their current pain and brokenness will be no more.

Have you experienced pain and brokenness that God has healed? It could have been physical. Or it could’ve been emotional and/or spiritual. For me the most recent experience of pain and brokenness came almost four years ago. As it settled in on me I felt like I was in exile. But God was faithful and soon began to rebuild and restore me, healing the wounds and strengthening my faith. God worked for good and for growth, leading me to a new place in my faith.

As you recall your experience of healing from pain and brokenness, realize that there are many in our world living in pain and brokenness right now. Their life is filled with the sounds of weeping and crying. There is little hope. How can we first see these folks and, second, how can we begin to shine the light of God’s healing love into their darkness? We begin by simply being the light. A beacon can draw others. Some will come, asking about our peace, our joy, our hope. A lighthouse illumines those dark edges, where, if we look, we can begin to see those living there. These we will have to reach out to. These we will have to go to. Then we will have to allow the Holy Spirit to lead as we come alongside those living in pain and brokenness, just as others once did when we were living there. Walking with them, guided by the Spirit and filled with God’s love, we can help others to find and experience God’s goodness and love, God’s mercy and healing grace. May we live as the light.

Prayer: Lord God, the pain and brokenness remains a vivid part of my life. But greater still was your healing and redeeming love. It is something I want to share with others. Lead and guide me to connect the hurting and broken to the new life that you offer to us all. Amen.

Poverty of Spirit

Reading: Matthew 5: 1-3

Verse 3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God”.

Today we focus in on the first verses of the Beatitudes. Yesterday we read through verse twelve, hearing all of the Beatitudes. Verses one and two set up the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. The basic idea here is that Jesus goes up a mountain and begins to teach. There is an implication in this that Jesus did not just go up a few feet, but went up a ways. If one wanted to hear Jesus teach, one had to exert a little effort and head up the mountain. Figuratively, this remains the case with our faith today. It does not come easily but requires some commitment on our part. This is especially true if we want to have a faith that grows and matures and deepens.

The one Beatitude that we have today is “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God”. Here Jesus follows a typical teaching style, beginning with the most important or critical and then unpacking from there. For example, in the Old Testament, the Ten Commandments begin this way. God begins by establishing the singular relationship – one God, one people. This is the hinge upon which all the others rest. To be poor in spirit does not mean having weak faith. It means recognizing our weakness. It means recognizing our need for God. To be poor in spirit requires humility and honesty. The process begins with recognizing our brokenness and our need for redemption. This leads to confession and repentance of our sins, an act that requires humility. No one in the world likes to admit they are wrong or have done wrong. A right relationship with God begins by admitting this and then yielding to God’s power to make us new again. To continue to live in this cycle requires honesty. To keep looking within, to keep acknowledging our sin, to keep asking for God’s help requires honesty. The battle with sin never ends so our need for forgiveness and renewal is neverending as well.

From a place of recognizing our utter reliance on God, the other Beatitudes unfold. Being meek, hungering for righteousness, being a peacemaker… – they come out of our poverty of spirit. May our daily walk ever be grounded in humility and honesty, in our deep need for God. May it always be so.

Prayer: Lord God, give me a will to keep trooping up the mountain to be in your presence. You’re always so willing to come down the mountain and into my valleys. Make me as willing to seek you humbly and honestly. Day by day, may my hunger and thirst for you grow. Fuel the fire, Lord, fuel the fire. Amen.
